I was just diagnosed with pcos and prescribed metformin to help me concieve.?
But I thought the reason for women with pcos to not concieve was irregular menses and mine are completely normal. So how could I benefit from this medicine. I also did the test strips to see if I was ovulating 2 months in a row and they came up positive. What could this mean? Could the medicine still help?
Answers:
If your periods are normal and ovulation prediction kits indicate that you are ovulating, I am not sure if metformin will help you are not. Maybe you aren't ovulating consistently, but two months of testing indicating you are ovulating would argue against that.
Metformin aids in weight loss if you are insulin resistant and over weight, which can affect fertility.
Metformin has also been shown to reduce systemic luteinising hormone levels, both of which have been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, this can also affect implantation of a fertilized egg.
I think it's definitely worth a trial run. If you are not diabetic, metformin can cause hypoglycemia, something to watch for.
I agree that it's doubtful whether you need metformin. Are you insulin resistant? Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance as well, and that can cause insulin to build up in the body, which causes the ovaries to function improperly. That is why many women with PCOS take metformin--it can control insulin resistance, allowing ovarian function (including ovulation) to return to normal. Irregular periods generally are indicative of lack of ovulation. If you have regular periods and regular ovulation, and are not insulin resistant, then I don't understand why you need metformin. You may want to get a second opinion on your PCOS diagnosis, since problems with irregular cycles and ovulation are very, very common symptoms.
I have 2 daughters who also have PCOS. Which is the leading cause of infertiity in women. both were on metformin at one time. it is supposed to help get rid of the excessive amount of hair and high testerone levels. And is used for fertility. Drinking alchohol inhibits the drug from working. my one daughter has been trying for years to have a child. best wishes to you
