How can I make my periods more regular?

All my life I've only gotton my menses once every couple of months, and when I would get them they would last anywhere between 5-14 days. Is there anyway to regulate it? I was on the shot for 9 months, and I had it constantly. My last effective date for my deppo shot was June 1st, and I think I'm getting my 1st one since just now, but I can't stand never knowing when I can't go swimming, or not knowing when I have to cancel my plans because I'm puking all over. I've tried excersizing, and it's only helped a little with the mind-numbing pain, but nothing with irregularity. Is this just what is "normal for me?" I also have sensitiv skin, so tampons are a no-go, if that helps.

Before I answer I will correct something other people have said – hormonal birth control does NOT regulate the menstrual cycle – hormonal birth control suppresses the menstrual cycle, this only covers up the problem and given it's effect on the body this is far from a healthy thing to do just to regulate the menstrual cycle.

If you are using hormonal birth control then this pretty much rules out anything you could use to regulate your cycles or predict your periods because hormonal birth control suppresses your cycles – sorry but without going onto a less invasive/excessive form of birth control there is no way to really regulate your menstrual cycles.

Irregular periods are normally caused by hormonal imbalances, methods would be to regulate those hormones whether with more natural means such as evening primrose oil or black cohosh or with more medical means such as progesterone cream, irregular periods can also be predicted using tracking methods such as fertility awareness method. You may want to consider another form of birth control and see what happens, after that if still irregular you will be able to find out why and treat the problem.

You don't say why tampons are a no-go, if because of the dangers then have you considered menstrual cups? Just a thought as they are not only safe and internal, they can be worn before your period is due so are often a good option for women with unpredictable periods.

Eat more bran and oatmeal, that keeps me regular.
The pill, lots of different types but should keep you regular and lighter.
If you always strike the same key, your periods will always be the same.
Go back to your OB-GYN doctor. They will change your contraceptive. There are contraceptive pills that will regulate your menstrual cycle like clockwork. Trust me.
