What's the real deal with this BMI crap anyway?
Body Mass Index is supposed to tell you if you're overweight by using height and weight to give an index. But what if you're fit, and cut, and overweight. Does the BMI go out the door and fitness is the ticket? I've been working out for the last 6 months and have lost over 20lbs, but because I'm eating good I've gained muscle mass which puts me over weight. What's up?
Answers:
take no notice of BMI. do the 'pinch test' instead. pinch more than an inch of flesh between thumb and index finger and you need to lose weight
Nope. Being overweight is over weight whether it is from fat or muscle.
muscle weight more than fat and u know that. don't listen to BMI anymore they said it's useless. focus on health more than weight.
It is a bad system because muscle weighs more than fat. So you may be considered overweight on the BMI scale but don't worry as long as you are not fat and are in good health you are considered to be physically fit.
The BMI messed me up when I was at Duke Diet and Fitness center, so they wieghed me hydrostatically (under water scale). It was a more accurate way of measuring mass and fat, then from there they were able to pin point a good wieght range and activity level.
According to the the BMI, I was considered obese. If I wanted to get down to a normal level it would've required that I drop 60lbs. Which, would have put me down to 115. Once they wieghed me hydrostatically and realized I was 110lbs lean mass, dropping 60 pounds would have made me sick.
From that point on I was able to be very selective in my activities and I was also able to raise my calorie intake from 1000-1200 to 1200-1500.
From what you said, it sounds like you are doing the right thing. You know your body, you know when you feel better and when you feel worse. Just as long as your blood and cholestrol are good you should keep going with your routine.
when i was in the navy they would take a set of calipers and "pinch" the skin on the back of our arms, that measurement along w/ our weight and height and some fancy formula resulted in a number that represented the amount of body fat one had. You were allowed a certain percentage - any one above that percentage was mandated to the "fat" diet and exercise program.. i never really knew if it was reliable or not but everyone i knew that was "sentenced" to the diet actually needed it..
thats crap!
nm jc u?
Even if you gain muscle, it wouldn't make you OVERWEIGHT. It replaces fat usually. Maybe you just have a little more to take off?
BMI is crap!! Have your body fat measured that will tell you more about how well you are doing!!
