I know for a fact they will keep you awake and make you very hungry! I have had to take them.
How long are you going to take the prednisone? The side effects happen with long term use and can be very severe. They are very safe with short term use. You should have any adverse effects.
Personal experience, I became depressed for six months. Horrible. I'll never take that stuff again. I also got nervousness and restlessness. I couldn't eat and didn't have an appitite. I always had this butterflies in my stomache feeling.
Prednisone is a syntheic corticosteroid, that is a hormone.
Corticosteroids are produced by the adrenal glands. When given as a perscription, it is primarily used for immunosuppression, that is, reducing the immune response for a specific purposed. It can be used for joint injuries to reduce swelling, and to prevent tissue rejection in organ transplantation. People with certain autoimmune diseases are also treated with prednisione.
Since it suppresses the immune system response, it makes you more susceptible to infection. When taken for more than 7 days, the adrenal glands (above the kidneys) shut down their own production of corticosteriods, which is why one must NEVER abruptly stop taking prednisone. The dose must be gradually tapered over a period of time to avoid a dangerous complication called Addisonian crises, which can be fatal.
There are other side effects like stomach upset, nausea, elevated blood sugar levels (which can become permanent in people who end up taking steroids over long periods of time- this is called steroid induced diabetes), fluid retention, Cushings syndrome (again, associated with long-term use), depression, insomnia, and glaucoma.
Steroids are never perscribed lightly, and if you are on them for longer than two weeks, you need to make sure that your blood sugar levels are monitored regularly. If you are already diabetic, then your levels of insulin or oral antihyperglycemic medications may also need to be adjusted.
