How long will it take me to stop craving another cigarette?

I quit smoking last week and I think about having a cigarette constantly. How long will it take for me to stop thinking about having a smoke? It's driving me crazy.

Answers:
Congratulations on making a decision to love your body enough to quit smoking!

It WILL get better so hang in there. I chain-smoked for 11 years, tried to quit many, many times. Was only successful when I figured out -and could admit it- WHY I smoked. I realized it had a lot to do with being tense, calming down, etc. So I did something sort of kooky but it worked for me. I "pretended" to smoke for a few weeks. Looked like a geek I'm sure, but I'd put my imaginary cigarette up to my mouth and inhaled slowly and then blew it out slowly just as I would if I were really smoking. It got me over the hump. Somehow admitting to myself "I'd love to do this the rest of my life but I just can't anymore" was liberating too.

By the 3rd week smelling smoke on others was starting to really be gross. By 3 months I was officially a non-smoker. For one year I had dreams occasionally, under stress, that I was smoking and if the urge hit I'd remind myself I was just tense, do some breathing and the moment would pass.

Three years after quitting I had a big fight with my husband one night and went out and bought a pack of cigarettes because I just wanted one so badly. When I inhaled it hurt so badly I don't even have the words to describe it. Have never been tempted since.

Today, I'm a very happy, much healthier, intolerant-of- smokers-non-smoker! (get terrible headaches around it, eyes water, just can't stand it at all.) You will be too so figure out what works for you and keep going.

Best of luck!

another five days
it will take a long time. the best idea is to throw away all of your cigarettes and even your lighters. it will help.
i dont know, it varies for each person, i suggest getting a hobby or something, my dad is trying to learn the guitar to help, but he still smokes, even around me, i ALWAYS smell like smoke, just start something to keep your mind off of it
well.it will probley take you about 2 months. just stop thinking about it think about some one or something that you realy like.
It could be forever.
My dad quit 30 years ago, he still craves them.
If it's driving you crazy then go and have a smoke. Would you rather go crazy or have lung cancer? Your choice dude.
It depends on your determination to stop smoking.
You're thinking of smoking because you don't really want to stop.

just try harder.
I heard it can take around two weeks to stop
craving. But even after months,if you happen to see one you will want it so you must use a ton
of will power and don't touch that cancer stick.
you will always crave that because you're adicted. It's like AA, you need a program to keep yourself from smoking. A lot of people return to smoking, however I've heard hypnosis works. Some people use the patch, some the gum, but mostly I've heard it's a programmed thing so you'll have to de-program yourself by finding out why you smoke and change your patterns.
It takes thirteen day to get a habit and thirteen days to quit . so don't give up . I quit 4 years ago and feel much better for doing it. So good luck
At least 20 years.
A crave only lasts 10 seconds. When one hits, count backwards from 10. it's all mental. After 72 hours nicotine free (assuming you quit cold turkey) it is out of your system. Just keep telling yourself the hardest part is over.

Good luck!
It will take about two weeks for the nicotine to leave your system, you have another week of constant craving to go, After that it will get easier, you have to get away from things that you associated with cigarettes. For me it was the first cigarette after work in the car. It was 1 year on July2 and still once in a while when I leave work I sit in the car and open my purse to look for a cig, but its
ok now, I can't stand the smell of Cigarette breath now,
Good Luck! You will make it!! Think of all the money you're saving, put it in a savings account and next year go on a great holiday,
Congratulations for not smoking for a week! Just think to yourself that you made it through the last day without one, you can make it through another. Then go do something to take your mind off of it.
get chewing gum and make yourslf busy.
Just as long as it takes for you to light up the next one.
60 days is usually the time it takes to end the cravings for hard core smokers. Remember it took you a long time to get to where you were at with the smoking,so it won't end that easily. Just try to find places and things to do that prevent you from smoking.
