Question about Deep Brain Stimulation Therapy?
On Wednesday my dad had DBST to help improve his Parkinson's symptoms. We brought him home Thursday. The doctors all said he might be "out of his mind" a little, like me he might not recognize us or remember us for a few days. This isn't happening. What IS happening is that he can only answer questions that require a "yes" or "no" answer. If you ask him a question that requires any other answer, he just stares at you blankly llike he didn't even hear you or he can't understand you. Does anyone know if this is normal?
Thanks.

Despite most people's belief, the brain is made up of a large number of different "modules" each of which do different things. In your father's case, it seems that they have disable one of those modules. However, you cannot be sure which one. It could be he does not understand the question, or he might not be able to react to the question. If he understands the question, he may not be able to express his reaction to it, in anything more complicated than a yes or no. However, with DBST they say that the effects can usually be reversed when the unit is either turned off or adjusted. So, there is an option which should be able to eliminate the side effects if they are too severe. However, you do not have to accept side-effects, if the result is unacceptable have them do something promptly. Here is a link to information about DBST:

I wish you the best of luck and will pray for a good result.
