I was told the bottles are made to break down and this is why it is bad to reuse them.?
Answers:
The only thing is sanitizing them, but when you freeze them many germs die, but remember to rinse!
Not true, actually plastic is so bad for the enviorment that it doesn't compose for 1,000,000 years! Its very bad, don't worry they don't. I was doing research on it for Earth day. So many people were astounded. Natural chemicals or acids cant even break it down, we tried lemon, hot sauce, vinegar, etc. Only fire and synthetic acids could!
Yes, I have heard that. It is recommended that you reuse the bottles only once.
that sounds fine.
I reuse disposable water bottles several times before discarding them. I use filtered water and always keep the water in the reused bottles refrigerated as "insurance" against germs. If I think a bottle might be too germy for some reason, I toss it. I've done this for years and have never gotten sick. I say if it's working for you, keep doing it. Just use your judgement. It saves money and reduces waste.
wash well in warm soapy water, rinse and let dry.. even clean the cap and you should be fine.
Deb, I suspect that you are an American from the way you seem to be so concerned about a thing as irrerelevant as this. Get a grip, lady, and I am sure you can come up with some thought provoking ideas. But this is not a major concern of anyone else in the world. You have been so misled and scared by the AMA that you are afraid to get a germ in your mouth. You fragile Americans should, at your level of education, realize that you are over-careful and no one likes your shining white-toothed confident smile anymore. If drinking out of a plastic bottle that has been around for a while is giving you bad dreams, please come out and meet the real world, my dear.
Well, I think most of the warnings you see are usually due to liabilities. Not because it is actually unsafe. In the country-of-lawsuits, you would put the same warning to cover your company.
If it is not a warning label on the bottle then do not worry about it. These bottles take quite a while to actually start decomposing. So it should be safe to use for quite a bit. Now due to the designed of bottles, you may hear about not reusing the bottle. This is usually because the designs of the bottles may not be easy to clean well and companies dont want you to get sick and sue them for a not well cleaned bottle just because you missed a spot.
A good idea is to get a new bottle every so often when reusing. From a logical point of view these bottle may sit around for quite some time before they are sold. So reusing a bottle for a month will be no issue. Now, if you use the bottle for a whole year, it might be a different story.
All in all, sanitize!
I thought I post this link since it is very cute and shows that these plastics are not meant to decompose within a few months.
I don't know that they are made to break down, I have heard though that putting the plastic bottles in the freezer is bad for you. I don't remember where I read that but the article said that it was bad for you because when the water freezes to the plastic bottle when it melts again it can contain traces of the chemicals used to make the plastic which could be carcinogenic. I will look up the article Im sure I saved it somewhere.
