What type of air filter would be best for my situation?

I work for a small business that is owned by my mom. There are five of us that work in a very small office building, though we all have individual offices. The problem is that they are all smokers and I am not - I quit in October '05. I have no intention of starting up again, that is not the problem. The frustrating thing for me is the stench of their cigarette smoke on my clothing/hair. I quit smoking because it stinks so bad, but I still stink at the end of the workday!! My mom has agreed to purchase an air filter to help make the environment a little easier on my senses. I am just not sure what to go with and could use some recommendations. Would it be best to just get one for my own personal office, where I spend most of my day? or should we get one to filter the air in the room they all smoke in on breaks? Thanks!! PS: We have no windows that open, either.

Actually the information about the FL Law is incorrect. There are exceptions to that law.

OK granted most states do have a no smoking in businesses law and there are exceptions but small business can usually get away with it till someone makes it an issue. Since you're the owner trying to find alternatives other than making them suffer the elements by smoking outside I applaud you. I've been in your situation. My family owns their own business and my father and our customers all smoke but my mother and I don't.

Some filters have charcoal in them and this does help some but not enough. Air fresheners cover up the smell but they also don't last very long. Lowes sells many different types of filters. The type of filter I found works the best is pricey but worth it. It's a HEPA filter that traps not just dust but even small plant spores like mold and pollen.

Also it depends on the size filter you need. We also have 2 additional air filter machines running in conjunction to the AC with it's HEPA filters.

I also suggest you go to Home Depot or Lowes and talk to them about the air filters they'll know more than I do.

I don't know about you, but smoking is not allowed in any office buildings in Florida, regardless of who owns them. Smoking indoors should not be allowed anywhere. Are there not laws in your area to protect your right to breathe fresh air?
EcoQuest makes several different types of air filters/air purifiers that elemenate cigarette smoke. I use the Fresh Air in my house for when my father in law comes for a visit. I turn the unit to face him and the smoke dissapears as it rises. You need something that creates a small amount of ozone in order to neutralize the smell and clean the air. It also has an ionizer that causes the smoke to attach to ions and it simply falls out of the air. While a lot of people believe ozone is bad for you I think they are misinformed. If there is too much ozone in the area around you it starts to smell like bleach. The reason you see alerts on high ozone during high pollution days is ozone is helping clean the air. The more pollution you have the more ozone is created when the sun comes up over the horizon. Ozone is usefull in a kitchen because it oxidizes and kills germs. Search out the truth on ozone and you will be amazed. EcoQuest makes a small personal unit that looks like a pager that can go around your neck. I prefer the large unit but it ain't cheep. Since it is your mom's business I think she might be able to write it off on her taxes as office equipment.
