What stigma is associated with depression?
When you hear about someone who is clinically depressed, what do you think?
Answers:
I never believed in it until I went through it myself. I don't judge anybody anymore.
That they've been relying on meds for years, instead of treating and learning how to deal with their problems differently.
not much stigma these days . . .it's fairly common
The stigma that seems to be associated with any type of mental illness, including depression, is that the person with the disorder is crazy.
I understand the stigma first hand.
Good Luck
that they are weak. They will tend to have "tendencies" to give up or just quit.
1 people think your crazy
2 people think your weak
3 people think your faking it
4 people think you need a kick up the **** and to stop being so F**KING lazy you selfish - self pitting slob!.
5. people think you have a break-down
6. people think your reason for bing depressed arnt valid
7. people think your trying to screw the benefits system.
8. Doctors and some people think you should take drugs and get back to work, insted of trying to deal with your problems
9. If you take councelling due to depression people will think your waisting your time as it doesnt work- in thier opion and your avoiding going to work
You'll be told you are "just lazy"
You are "over thinking" your problems or
"its all in your head"
OF COURSE its all in your head. what a dumb thing to say.
You will be labelled as a pessimist, and ask to "look for the positive"
Your wife will tire of trying to boost your mood and will end up resenting you, then hating you, and finally leaving you.
If you take meds, you are labelled as a head case, looked at as a potential suicide, or feared as a potential criminal.
Depression and other mental illnesses, along with obesity, are perhaps the two LAST conditions that people feel comfortable ridiculing.
I think about those depression commercials with the little blobs that are so effective in making everyone think they're clinically depressed. That said, some people REALLY are and need the drugs, but the majority aren't.
Perhaps some of these people need more God in their life, and less drugs.
I think: "What a shame!" Life should be a happy event with occasional bumps in the road. I think: "I hope they get help soon.". No stigma.
