Hello alanstraughton,
I am running a website about handresearch and your question is answered on my website with these words:
http://www.handresearch.com/hand/Evolutie/functieEngels.htm
"The nails have a surplus value for the hand grip as well. On the one side the nails can be used as a manipulative organ: one can use the nails for scratching and scraping, but for example one can use the nails as well for removing a plinter from our skin. On the other side nails have a stabilizing role. For the nails protect the nerve endings in the fingertips and this prevents the creation of callosity. Because of the nails we don't lose our‘finger-spitzen gefühl’."
Thanks for asking!

Protection.
look funny without them
They are nature's 'tools'!
They are vestigial claws.
to scratch our azz and back
so we can paint them all the pretty colours of the rainbow
They used to be claws!
Evolutionary cause. since we used to climb on trees a yay long time ago ie couple of million years our nails (claws) where used to help us grip to trees. As we evolved the gradually reduced and did not become prominent and flattened out over our fingers
They are called vestigial nails i.e. they have no practical use for us just like our appendix or tonsels
To give yourself a good ol' scratchin, aaaaahhhh, that's good!!
try picking up a coin w/ out using your nails. there are used for so many things that you do everyday; you just dont realize you are using them.
