Methadone has been used in the last few years as a substitute for heroin and morphine for addicts, in the hopes that it would help them to wean off those. But what is discovered now, is that methadone is even more addictive than heroin. So if someone is really interested in getting clean, it is better not to be on methadone maintenance.

Methadone is an oil-soluble opioid made by two German chemists around WWII. It is longer acting and does not resemble other opioids in chemical structure. Today it has two uses: In helping people with opioid dependency get of street drugs (like heroin and such, not useful for cocaine addiction.) Also it is a very good pain killer and is used for people with chronic pain (like osteoarthritis.) It is controlled (section ii in the U.S.) and could be prescribed by addiction clinics or pain specialists.
