Can the medically helpful ingredients in marijuana be put into a pill?

If the medical benifts gained by smoking marijuana could be had by taking a pill made out of the same substance would it be such a big deal getting it legalized?

I assume the THC is what gives the medical benifit, could we extract it from the plant and put it into a pill?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to people smoking it, I'm just curious if it would be possible to get the same benifits from a pill.
Thanks

Yes, a pill already exists called Marinol, produced by Solvay Pharmaceuticals. This drug treats nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conventional treatments. MARINOL also treats appetite loss associated with weight loss in people who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

It is also very heavily regulated by the FDA.
the only reason mary jane is illegal in the first place is because the first head of the fda banned all drugs and alcohol to boot. the ban on alcohol was overturned after 10 years, but the fact is there isn't a huge company from another country funneling funds into legalizing it like there was booze.
There are THC pills already, they're called marinol
