do you think hypnotism is legit-and why?

i was thinking of getting hynotized, but dont know if i should??

Answers:
I have consistently learned in class that hypnosis only works as a means of suggestion. If you *want* to start/stop some behaviour, then I think it is legitimate.

My father used it to quit smoking-- he's been quit now for 15 years. If the hypnotist is well-respected, then I say, "go for it!"

hypnotism takes many forms so depends on the purpose and use and thus can be abused.
It is has been used with some success to assist those looking to change smoking habits, eating habits and recall events of the past. The problem with that last one is it can never be 100% as our subconscious mind does not separate "fact" from "fantasy".

The form most of us see is the magic show/ quack like a duck type or the "secret agent hypnotized killer" movies. It creates some mild fear "what if I do ..." because I was hypnotized.
It works on stage because people expect to be make to quack like a duck.
The "medical" use of hypnotism is to clam or relax a person so they can be examined or treated (setting a bone, given an injection) and recall events before and during the injury.
I watched my dad do this in his medical practice, in the office, at hospital and twice while we were on vacation when we came across a car wreck in the middle of no-where.
Other "medical" uses include helping a person change their mind set about smoking, eating or other habits they wish to change.
The key is the willingness of the person to be hypnotized. Unlike the movies or stage shows - where people expect to be make to quack like a duck - if an idea is planted or attempted that goes against your values that cognitive interruption (your brain saying "WHAT THE HEL." will bring you out of the hypnotic state.
In other words - if you do not really want to lose weight, stop smoking or whatever. hypnotism would likely be of little value to you.
I know people that with the helpof hypnotism and "suggestions to the subconscious mind", have stopped smoking after 20 years, and several friends that have lost over 100lbs each - their single focus was - I want to do to. whatever the change (not I need to do this)
On the other hand if you have day dreamed about being a wild and crazy guy with the ladies, hypnotism can bring them to the surface - remember the subconscious mind does not know the difference between "fact" and "fantasy / day dreams".

Look for where the person has studied/learned hypnotism. Self study and practice on the pet dog or college courses? (note courses - as in more than one)
What "degree" do they have - for example are they an MD/Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Natualpath or a dog catcher
Does your State Medical / Naturalpatic boards have recommendations for use of hypnotism and does this person meet or exceed those qualifications and practices.
I know the police and other investigators like to ask people to by hypnotized to "recall events". --- I would not let a "policeman" or any "investigators" hypnotize me. ---- There have been cases with both victim and accused coming away recalling things that might not have happen in the context of the current criminal investigation. This has happened in robbery, murder, rape and just about any other crimes that people want "solved" by any means available to them (such as polygraph which is not accepted/admissable in the courts of all 50 states by the way)

The mind during hypnotism is very open to suggestion. If you have wondered about being a "naughty" boy but would never act out on it, that openness might - note I said might - open you to a suggestion that you might do a given act, given the right situation/environment.
That is why you MUST use someone properly trained - I don't believe police or there "related" helpers have any interest in helping you recall things with hypnotism (based on another post you made) - get a lawyer - you need one.

This watched this happen to my best friend - we were out on a week long fishing trip with 5 other people the day of the "abuse". To handle that, the prosecutor expanded the "possible" dates of abuse to a month either way. A police hypnotism "expert" created doubt in his mind about what his acceptable "age limits" for sex given opportunity/environment. There was no hair/sperm/DNA stuff to tie him to the abuse. Jury didn't seem to care about that part. He had spent almost 3 years in prison before killing himself. He had fought depression most of the years I knew him so in a way I was surprised it took so long but I still miss him, he was after all my best friend.
I'll end my rant.
For God sakes be careful
