Is hypnosis scary?
Hi, I am in my last year of school in college and am presedent of a music sorority. Next week we are going to induct new members and have a lot of fun during or pledge and after pledge week. During all this our sorority has hired a hypnotist to perform and as the presedent I will have to volunteer and get hypnotized. I am really worried about this because I don't want to embarass myself and am worried that hypnotists could take advantage of me. Has anyone here been hypnotized and knows what it's like? Does it hurt and does it make you all suggestable afterwords? Or..is it just a lot of fun. I want to have fun next week and participate but.this nervous I doubt I can. I appreciate any help.

Hypnosis performed in a clinical setting is quite different from that of the stage hypnosis shows you may have seen on tv, in the movies, nightclubs, cruises, etc. In a nutshell, stage hypnosis is typically performed for entertainment purposes to make others laugh. Hypnosis in a clinical setting is practiced solely for the purpose of helping you with your goals.
In clinical hypnosis, you are able to hear everything that goes on and can interrupt the process at anytime should you feel uncomfortable.
A stage hypnotist is skilled at running volunteers through a series of tests to weed out poor responders on stage. The result: the remaining participants he selects are the best responders of an audience of perhaps a hundred or more. It does not involve people being made to do things against their will
For stage, you might not even be chosen. The people who volunteer as subjects for stage hypnotism, are in effect self-selecting themselves, are happy to lose their inhibitions and be the centre of attention (extroverts), and are willing to go along with the show, whether or not they are actually in a state of hypnosis.
In REAL hypnosis, you are always in control and can choose to follow or ignore the suggestions of the hypnotherapist.
