Answers:
they will take effect almost straight away. You will feel chilled out.
Only take when you feel a panic attack coming on and that way you shouldnt get addicted.

they are so good...that is why it is hard to stop taking them. It will relax you though. Use it in moderation.
TAKE ONE and calm down! You will feel so much better you can get hooked but that is only if you take them for a long time! We like Valium :) Angel
You seem too young to be put on valium your doctor wants his head testing try to do without them you can get hooked on them my mum did, it took her years to come off them
When my grandmother died I took one before her funeral. It calmed me enough to help me keep my composure yet I was still alert enough to cry and feel the moment. Just try one.I promise you will not become a zombie, especially if the doctor prescribed them specifically for you.
if you decide not to take them give 'em to me
i take valium sometimes 2 chill me..ive been put on sleeping tablets now cuz most of my tempers were becuz of lack of sleep
Therapy is better than drugs. Therapy will deal with the reason(s) you are panicking. Drugs merely cover the problem up.

Plus drugs make your head really foggy. (Trust me I know. I used to be pumped up to the eye balls on stuff to keep me calm while I had therapy. I'm off them now and feel GREAT)

Reject the drugs, request therapy. Its worth it in the long term.
Don't!

My neighbours husband became moronic on them and became seriously addicted and can never come off them!

Go and do some breathing exercises, join a club, do line dancing, do anything that expends energy and the more you do, the less stressed you will be!

Trust me. I'm an old wise owl who made it without pills through so much stress, it would take six tomes to share it!

Be strong. stay safe. refuse all mind altering pills. all sleeping pills. all tranquilisers!

YOU CAN DO IT. because, inside you, is a confident and knowledgeable person, who knows she doesn't need a quack who's making a profit for the big drug companies, and who's using her, as a vehicle to get rich!

And did you know. in the UK, the highest rate of suicides is in GPs?

Knowing this alone. should tell you all you need to know in answer to your question and give you strength, to do it on your own!
Valium, or diazepam, is of a class of psychotropic drugs called benzodiazepines. It acts as an axiolytic, or antianxiety, medication in that it calms the entire body, brain included. The effects of Valium last for multiple hours, and it remains in your body for about a day. It is one of, if not the most, long lasting benzodiazepine. When used for the treatment of panic, they are effective but you are correct to worry about stopping them. While not highly addictive, the anti-anxiety effects that they produce are extremely reinforcing and can become habit forming. You may wish to consider cognitive behavioral therapy with a psychologist, as they will help you and your symptoms, rather than prescribing a generic pill to simply mask your panic symptoms.
Valium is basically a muscle relaxant. It helps with panic attacks because you can't get into a panic if your body is relaxed. They work fairly quickly and the effect is quite pleasant.

They are not addictive. However, if you have an obsessive personality, they can become a part of your life and you don't want to give them up. They're good to get you through a short term crisis, but not if panic attacks are a long term feature of your life.

Relaxation exercises work in the same way as Valium - they just take a lot longer. You'll probably find they sell relaxation tapes at the chemist. Give it a try - you can only lose the price of the tape!
taken occasionally they are fine and will help you.taken every day and you will be hooked and they will do harm.
wonderful if you have a dose of the flu and want to sleep through the worst bit.
valium calms you down when stressed out.it relaxes the nerves and enables you to sleep.it can only be recommended by your doctor. it can become addictive when taken too often.the risk of over dependence is possible.
If you are at all concerned about taking this medicine then i would stress that you read the enclosed leaflet and also take time to speak to your GP before you start taking any form of medication. Medication can have different reactions for different people and also side effects, never take anything if you have a concern.

Your GP will be able to reassure your concerns and answer any questions that you have, a chemist may also be able to help but they will probably refer you back to your GP. Never take advice from anyone that is not qualified as their advice could be incorrect.
I took Valium when i went in to have my wisdom teeth out. Since it was a one time thing for a procedure, I was given a very high dose (still a pill tho) and I was *really* worried about how it would make me feel since I normally take NO meds. It turns out that I didnt notice any big effect. I was just a little more calm (maybe after 15 min?), but it didnt change my thinking at all. In fact, if I knew how little I would feel the effects, I probably would have just had the teeth pulled! Probably better not to drive, as I may have been slower to react that I could tell, but dont be worried about it making to act different or anything. Dont know about long term/stopping them- good luck!
Valium is a very strong drug. It does depends on what dose he has given you. There are side affects to this drug and i hope the doctor has explained this to you. It will take 2 weeks to get into your system. You should be weened off this medication and not stop altogether as you will get the side affects which are dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches etc please read the leaflet you get inside the medication box. I have been on prosac which didn't much help and Ive tried saroxat which did agree with me. There are loads of tablets to try and take. They need to find out which is the best on for you. Valium will carm you down and will make you feel as ive you have had 5 vodkas .
If you can, try alternative ways of relaxing, like yoga, or join a group for people who suffer from panic attacks. Doctors who prescribe valium are irresponsible and often do not consider the long term consequences for the patient. I was on them for only one month and when I tried to come off them I went into total withdrawal. I had terrible anxiety, couldn't sleep and my panic attacks increased, therefore it had to be done over a period of 8 months and was literally reduced by 1mg a week. I really don't advise it. I will never ever take them again. Now I do yoga, swimming and relaxation sessions. They are better than any tablet. Good luck honey.
try um your dr. knows what he is doing..You won,t explode or nothing..they will at first make you sleepy but fight that ...that is when the fun starts pretty soon you will get kinda .super mellowed out..then don't drive a car but have a friend take you somewhere ...then you will probally say some some things you allways wanted to say to some di*k Head and you will do it...people will wonder where you all opf a sudden got the balls but do not tell them..let them wonder..make them feel little good luck..let me know.if you need more cool stuff to do XXXXX
Don't take them.
I know doctors deal them out like sweeties, but it won't do anything for you in the long run but turn you into a giggling idiot. I know, I've been there. Coming off them was the hardest thing I ever did in my entire life, and I'm nearly 60.
Confront your panic, if possible with the help of a therapist, but do confront it instead of blanking it out. That's only another form of trying to run away.
I'd recommend to seek advice from a herbalist, too, there are many plants that don't make you dependent that might help you.
As you can see from the answers so far,
most people have only good effects from Valium.
Addiction was only a real problem years ago, before doctors had many alternatives to offer.

I was on 12mg a day for a couple of months, and had no trouble at all stopping them. I slept really well on them, and they just calmed me down really well.

What I did find a lasting cure for anxiety and depression
was CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Your doctor might be able to refer you.

Hope that helps.
Be hopeful.
Bad times don't last for ever, and you will get better.
instead of the Valium try taking a look at what triggers the anxiety in the fist place and alter your thinking around these situations.Valium should only be taken as a short term solution(2-3)weeks depending on patient.they are from the family listed as benzodiazipines which if taken for long term are highly addictive so be real careful ok.can your doctor get you some counselling for this anxiety? have you tried acupuncture? good luck
keep track of how many you take in a day the doctor probally put how many should be taken in a day or you take it on a as needed basis. it will calm you down i think maybe 30-60 min after you take it. it will make you feel calm different people have different reactions to it. i would suggest if you feel uncomforable about taking the medication touch base with your doctor he can better advise you if you are anxious about it. or your pharmacist can help as well.
Sadly Valium is a great drug when used properly but is so misuded. It will calm you down but will adversely effect your sleep as it messes up sleep architecture. If you are disciplined enough to use as directed (try half tab) it's OK. However, as has already been said, there is a great danger of becoming addicted.

Paroxitine (Paxil) is used for panic disorder and is neither addictive nor mind altering. It's an SSRI also used for depression. Try to get therapy rather than drugs, in the long term
I myself take diazapam 5mg 4 times a day yes they are very addictive I have been on them for 6 years past in July.
They also put weight on as they slow down your metabolism.
I was 8 1/2 stone when I started them I am now 10.
Saying that when I went on them I really found them a life saver and now I cant do without them they take about half an hour to kick in. I still wish I hadn't started them I have tried to go off them several times but I take the shakes get short tempered etc and give in.
Be very careful. You're right to be cautious as they easily cause addiction. After 10 days of continual use their action significantly decreases and you're at risk of addiction - mental and physical addiction.

They do help calm you/sleep. But use them wisely.

I got addicted and ended up on 300mg+ per day. It was like being a zombie and basically not being IN this life. In a benzo/valium bubble.

Coming off that amount is extremely difficult and both mentally and physically painful. It can bring on seizures and an addict typically ends up with reversed effects (one example being insomnia instead of sedation/sleep).

Take care, don't be afraid, just be careful

personally, i think you would be better getting some relaxation cd's and get some Kalms or Natracalm or Quiet Life tablets from the chemist they are all herbal and non-adictive, my mum was on valium and it took a long time for her to come off them good luck
Personally I found them to be great. I took them for a trapped nerve in my neck, I hadn't slept for a couple of days, was in pain, couldn't move and was quite distressed. The on call doc gave me a few to take over a couple of days. WOW, I took one as he left, within 15 mins, I was ready to sleep and was relaxed enough to sleep face down on the bed for the next 4 hours! They are a wonderful relaxant, and i can see your reluctance to take them as i still have some saved for emergencies, however if you need to relax as your panicking is affecting any decision making then maybe you should take them, as I'm sure you only have a limited supply and once you have overcome the panic attacks you should be right again. Maybe though you really need to get to the root of the panics. Ask if you can see a counsellor.
they will make u feel like nothing matters in the world its a lovely feelin but very addictive try and take them only when ya need em it took me a long time to stop craving themxxxxx
