Many people view mental illness as a condition that you can just decide not to have. They do not understand that is it truly an illness just like diabetes or the flu. They think that just because it is not caused by a bacteria or virus that you can just get over it or shake it off. Also people sometimes fear things they don't understand.

Those with no understanding just simply don't have a clue what it's like to have a mental illness.OR they are so mentally ill they can't help it.
i'm ill. i keep it on the dl. people say stuff. i ignore their stupidity.
No, actually I'm not. There is still quite a stigma attached to any type of mental illness. I've always considered it on the same level as having diabetes or high blood pressure. There is an imbalance, and medications help to control it. But, i still hear words like "crazy" and "psycho". I guess it will take a while longer.
No, because unfortunately many people are ignorant and/or afraid of mental illness. They want to avoid thinking about it, so they joke or make fun of the mentally ill. Some people of course are just cruel towards those who appear "different." Live and let live is my motto.
we're all crippled - just, for most of us, you can't see the wounds.

some people can't - or won't - understand that. an emotional/ psychological injury is just as real and painful as any physical one.
I think partly to blame here are the people who misuse this to their advantage.and those who don't really have a mental illness but say they are depressed and try to misuse it when they've not been diagnosed and don't take medicines.
Unfortunaltly there is still a stigma about mental illness. Also there are simply alot of hatefull people in this world. If people would just get it that the brain is an organ and it can get sick like any other organ then just maybe they would get real.
Mental Illness, unfortunately, has long been a punchline as the butt of jokes. Obviously, these people do not suffer from a mental illness because if they did, they wouldn't think it's so funny to joke about or be rude about.
I've noticed that and it is why I don't tell most people about my bipolar disorder. I would feel a lot more comfortable if I could just talk to people about it, but I can't. That's sad.
I think that a lot of people are unsympathetic because they feel the person who is mentally ill can "snap out of it". It's normal to fear the unknown, but have some compassion. Most mental illness patients don't have control over their actions and emotions...medication,shock & talk therapy help, but still not 100%..as those who are not afflicted. Many people go on to live normal, productive lives, but some are destined to live in a world of confusion. I really wish there would be more people who try to understand & empathise rather than being judgemental & cruel...do you really think the individuals prefer living with this everyday?.you only have to deal with it a few moments during day to day interactions.
YES and no because ppl with mental problems are diffrent but they have feelings 2
why suprised ,imagine you are a kid again and gage attitudes towards mental health ,or strange ness of any kind
the mayority is ignorent or affraid of the unusual.
to see an attitude in print hits home maybe harder, but in reality there is little difference .with what you would experience in the street
unfortunately this is the reality of humanity.
Rascism, bigotry, biasedness Religious fanatism , mentalily controlled people ,HATE BUT ALSO LOVE ,COMPASION,understanding
it is all reflected here in yahoo.
It is a window into the mentality that exists out there
And I have said before ,that it is scary to become aware of that

Dont be sad though ,because those that come through as sympathetic outshine the negative elements.
