Can a family practice M.D. prescribe medication for depression?
I suffer from depression and have for years. My mother suffered all her life, my sister also suffers as well as my son who is 19. They all have been on medication and it has helped them enormously. My son's dr. at the time was a pediatrician and prescribled his meds. I really need some help and don't have a Dr. of my own. I really don't want to advertise to the family that I am suffering with these issues. What kind of Dr. is best for this?
Answers:
A family practice doctor can prescribe antidepressants. However, perhaps your family practice doctor could refer you to a good psychiatrist. As with any disease, once you get the basic diagnosis, it's always good to follow up with a specialist. With respect to depression, you have the best chance of recovery if you participate in counseling or psychotherapy along with medication. Medication can help any biochemical imbalances you have and help you get back into the swing of things, while your conseling helps you get at root causes and deeper issues that may be contributing to your depression.
yes
A family practice doctor can do it.
Yes they can! I would totally talk to your MD.
An MD CAN prescribe antidepressants, although I'm not always sure they should, given the sensitive territory of the mental health, which many regular family practitioners have had little direct experience with. I would suggest going to a psychologist (for therapy) or a psychiatrist (therapy + drugs) first.
There is nothing to be ashamed of, Depression is an illness just as diabetes or any other ailment. Family Physicians/GPs are very adept at treating depression and you should get to see one ASAP.
No need to live like that. I have been there too
yes family practitioners can however he may also send u to a specialist don't pay to much ask first
actually, any Doctor can do it.good luck!
Yes Your Family Dr can write you out the meds that U Need
If i were you I would skip the family doctor and go straight to the Psychiatrist because most family doctors will tell you to do that anyways. Go straight to him because they are usually up on the newest and best medications to put you on. I hope that you feel better.
A psychiatrist actually is the best. They have training in medication for depression that other physicians don't have. Some also do therapy but many don't. GP's also can prescribe but it's not their specialty. Also, a fair number of people do not respond to the first medication tried, and at that point it's usually best to be working the specialist.
PS - med plus therapy are thought to be more effective than just meds or just therapy.
get a primary care physician and he/she can prescribe the antidepressants. i would also suggest seeing a therapist!
M.D.'s can, but they usually give one or two basic ones without giving you a psychological evaluation. A Psychiatrist will give you the right medicene based on your psych eval. Good luck, Kitty
Yes, they can, but try a psychiatrist. This is their speciality and can modify your meds. They are more up to date on the meds, also. Good luck.
is your family really going to know what you and your personal doctor discuss? on the other hand your family could help you with your issues, if you are 35 on up you could be going through what is called paramenapause, pre-mena and depression and mood swings are a primary symptom hot flashes come later. yes your doctor can help you with diagnosis and prescriptions and refer you to further help if needed from a specialist
yes they can but keep in mind that a psychiatrist has additional training and experience in perscribing psychotropic medications and will probably have a better idea about what will work for you and better recognize any side effects that might occur.
I told my family doctor that I had been crying at the drop of a dime,I was smoking like a freight train,I could not sleep at night or I slept too much.I did not want to tell my family because they have always felt that I'm not wrapped to tight. Well I put my feelings out for my doctor when I went in for a routine cleckup ,thinking I have to tell someone . To my amazment he prescribed zoloft for me and all my depressive feelings are gone after three months. No one in my family knows about this except my oldest son .I can tell him things without judgement. Please listen to me and get help. You do not have to feel like that! I love you;smile
Yes, your regular family Doctor can prescribe antidepressants. They also took an oath not to discuss your condtion with anyone else, so your secret will be safe. I hope you get the help you need. I, too, take antidepressants and the right ones can make a big difference in your mood and attitude. Sometimes it is trial and error to get the correct medication , so hang in there and let the doctor help you.. Good luck and God bless you. :)
Your family doctor can prescribe the meds but also keep in mind that the meds are only covering up the problem. It's not a cure! Maybe some family counseling would do you all some good. Because the issues that you are covering up are probably coming out in a different form. Good Luck
duh
medical Dr's may be able to give you a prescription for medication for depression but shouldn't you need to be evaluated there are many different diagnosis. i suffer from depression but I'm bipolar2, also psychotic, i have a mood disorder, so i have to take like 3 different anti-depressants plus sleeping pills so a medical Dr would have to know what type of depression you are suffering from to know what meds to give you i don't think he'll be able to help you much it's best you see a psychiatrist.
