Fear of Water?
Anyone have advice on getting over a crippling fear of putting my face in the water? I'm not afraid of drowning, just of not breathing. I have gone to pools and tried to practice, but it dosen't help with the fear. Thanks!

hmmm. . . . when you are putting your face in the water, don't just concentrate on the fact that your face is in the water. To get your mind off of it, concentrate on blowing bubbles. To help with this, pretend that you are blowing out the candles on a birthday cake. Once you are confortable with how much air you have in your lungs, and the fact that you don't just have to think about putting your face in the water, you should be ok.

See a psychologist for some talk therapy. They also may be able to try hyponosis, which is great for fears like this. Good luck~

I am unsure what to say on this one. I have heard of it before but never actually met anyone like it. I know that my late father in law had a fear of water all together.
Try using a snorkel.
take a relaxing bath and let your body sink slowly after you have been soaking for a while. Get completely relaxed and try to think of other things. If that doesnt work, try it in the sink. Good luck!
Sorry, I dunno, just throw your whole self right under. I love the water, my dad claims that I'm part fish or something. But once you get in there you might love it too. Good luck.
start off with a bathtub full of water and only go deep enough to cover your mouth but breath out your nose, then try going slower and more deeper to where only your eyes are above the water. main point go slow and take it in steps
I know how you feel. I have a fear of not being able to breathe too. When I swim, I don't put my head in the water. I swim above the water. At least you are not afraid to go in the water or even to try. The fact that you are trying is a start. Take it slowly. Eventually you might get used to it and it wont scare you anymore. I am working on it too.
Any phobia is the result I believe of an underlying anxiety that hasn't been dealt with. There are two things to do. 1. Go to a counselor that specializes in phobias. They can help you work through it with cognitive-behavioral work. 2. Go to a counselor for talk therapy to work through your issues that are causing anxiety. You name yourself jewess vegan-- are you a vegan because of anxiety as well? Counselling is a good idea here.

Re-educate your unconscious mind to relax around water
Any fear response is a learned response that can be 'unlearned'. Hypnosis can gently and enjoyably teach your mind to be comfortable around and in water. Of course, you will maintain a healthy respect for water, but the old overwhelming fear will be gone.
