Adderall Prescription, Psychologist vs a Neurologist?
I have been taking Adderall for 3 years with no problems, it works fine for me, unlike other meds (Wellbutrin, Stratera) that have not. My current doctor is not able to prescribe it to his patients anymore. Now I have to find another doctor to prescribe it. Where do I start? I know not all Doctors prescribe it, but Psychologists and Neurologists do for sure. Which one should I go to? I don't have serious mental problems, I have just always had a hard time concentrating
Answers:
Unless you live in New Mexico or Louisiana, psychologists cannot prescribe medication. Psychologists specialize in psychotherapy which helps people to learn to help themselves get better, and also gives them the knowledge of how to overcome obstacles in the future.
Psychiatrists have their MD degrees and can prescribe medication.
Neurologists can prescribe, as they have their MD as well, but generally are not all that involved with ADHD (which is why I assume you take Adderall).
I would recommend seeing a psychiatrist if all you want is the medication, or perhaps see a psychologist and get a medication request from him and give it to a primary care physician.
Psycholigist will talk to you and see if they can fix probs
A neurologist will give you a MRI or Cat Scan see if there is any damage that makes you that way..
so might be best to talk to Psychlogist first.
