Why do we get SAD (seasonal adjustment disorder) and why is it a disorder?

Is it because main stream can put the "disorders" to one side and not have to deal with it?

First, why do people get SAD?

I have heard that it is from lack of some vitamins and/or chemicals the body produces when skin is exposed to sunlight.

The following is from a website, source listed below:

The problem stems from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known. It is not a psychosomatic or imaginary illness.

Your next question, why is it a disorder - it is because the anomaly is out of the realm of normalcy.

Your third question - Is it because main stream can put the "disorders" to one side and not have to deal with it?
I don't feel not having to deal with it is the case. The fact that the problem has been identified and that there is ongoing research proves otherwise. But in another vein, yes, since the mainstream population does not suffer from the disorder, many probably don't even think about it.

By the way, one irony about this. Think about the quandary of needing sunlight to alleviate the problem versus the fact that too much sun is also unhealthy because of the possibility of skin cancer. I don't know if THIS has been studied, but probably if you use sunblock to prevent the unhealthy side effects of skin cancer, does this also deprive you of the benefits of sunlight to help alleviate SAD?

Experts think Seasonal Affective Disorder has a lot to do mainly with stress from the holidays and lack of sunlight, among a few other things.
Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mood, metabolism and behaviour and human beings are just the same. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days. For some, however, symptoms are severe enough to disrupt their lives and to cause considerable distress.
Here are some of the signs and symptoms:
Sufferers have to endure most of the following:

Sleep problems - oversleeping but not refreshed, cannot get out of bed, needing a nap in the afternoon
Overeating - carbohydrate craving leading to weight gain
Depression, despair, misery, guilt, anxiety - normal tasks become frustratingly difficult
Family / social problems - avoiding company, irritability, loss of libido, loss of feeling
Lethargy - too tired to cope, everything an effort
Physical symptoms - often joint pain or stomach problems, lowered resistance to infection
Behavioural problems - especially in young people

The problem stems from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known. It is not a psychosomatic or imaginary illness.
whats with the "we", not everyone gets it
A lack of sunlight messes with the brain chemistry, disorders tend to have no physical symptoms as such tend to be more to do with the brain. More info on SAD can be found below I have a light box and it has change my life, If you have it it can be dealt with,
coz in nowadays they call all disorders!

kid is bad behaving in school
its some disorder (maybe he just should do some sports!?!)

kid has problem with learning - its disorder (maybe he is just lazy ??)

you got my point?
SAD is caused by lack of sunlight, where I live it is gloomy almost always, it is depressing, just out of the valley the weather is much nicer. I think their should be a disorder called SMILE.
Summer Months I Love Everything.
to say SAD should be put aside is like saying
"be miserable in july" you just can't do it.
