Answers:
Weight Gain is one of the less common side effects. You should tell your doctor about it if you experience it, but it is not life-threatening.

Less Common: Fainting; fast or slow heartbeat; irregular pulse; troubled breathing (especially during hard work or exercise); unusual tiredness or weakness; weight gain

The most common side effects of lithium are:

Increased frequency of urination or loss of bladder control - more common in women than in men, usually beginning 2 to 7 years after start of treatment; increased thirst; nausea (mild); trembling of hands (slight)

I don't take it, but I know that there is weight gain associated with it. From what I understand it can also make your skin break out.
I take lithium and have continuously for a decade. It may have caused side effects at the onset, but nothing now. I never experienced weight gain and I think that depends on one person to the next. It is the best drug to try and be open about. It is also the cheapest drug of choice.
My brother gained weight on lithium.
My mother is on Lithium and Effexor and in my opinion, she has some very noticeable side effects. She has severe memory loss and noticeable shaking/trembling. Please make sure you have the right doctor before taking this medication.
