What is the best medicine to take when you are depressed?

Answers:
It depends on the cause of the depression and whether it is temporary or chronic (long-term), and also on the person's own personality, brain chemistry balance, diet, social and work situation and general health.

If someone you know is depressed -- or seems to be -- the best thing you can do is get her/him to a doctor. I would NOT recommend experimenting with various different anti-depressants to see which one 'works'. That is extremely dangerous, because the person's brain chemistry can be severely disrupted by this type of 'trial and error' method. And the medicines could interfere with others the person may be taking and increase, decrease or modify their effects.

Any good doctor will soon be able to see if the patient is a person s/he can treat at general practice level or not. If the case is more serious, s/he will refer the person to a specialist, who has spent years studying about such problems and will be able to prescribe what is most likely to help the patient. It does not always mean that the doctor will prescribe medicine, either. There are other things, such as group sessions, exercise, changes in diet, light therapy, and so forth.

I hope this helps you.

I go to church when I am depressed. It gets me motivated. I have been going regularly lately and I have not been depressed anymore.
You have to work with your doctor to find the medicine that is right for you and your circumstance. Every bodies body chemistry is different so meds work different for everyone. Right now I take Cymbalta and it is working the best of any I have been on. I started taking meds. for depression in 2001, and have been on about a dozen different meds just to find the one that works the best for my circumstances and my body chemistry.
I would say Seroquel, if your doctor approves. It kicks in right away, as long as you work your way up to a high dose, it can be very effective. You could go from 0mg to 500mg in 2weeks, if you are a healthy person. And at 500 (or possibly more) you'll notice a difference.
