How long does depression last?

Answers:
That depends on if a specific person or event has made you depressed or if you are suffering from depression on general. If you are suffering from depression in general, you may want to talk to your doctor about it, since a lot of untreated depression can become more severe if not treated properly. Good Luck!

It is different for everyone! Depends what is causing it, how you treat it and how you personally deal with it. Some people can be depressed all their lives, others for a few weeks or months..
as long as you want it to last. that's what meds, exercise, and therapy are for. oh, and of course it depends upon your environment.
it really depends on a lot of things are you taking medication as that can take up to 3weeks to work.I have suffered and there is a light at the end of the tunnel honest. i still suffer from blue days but not so many and its been 8 years now
Typically from the time you realize that what life is about until you die.
it depends on how long u wanna stay depressed...
as long as u want it to last unless you get help and go to the doctors! get anti depressants but dont let it get too far because it can also lead to you taking ur own life and im sure there is a lot of people who love you and know that ur not stupid enough to do that!! good luck xoxox
some people suffer all their life, but it learning to live with it, like any other illness or disorder..
it can last for many years. I've had it now for probly about 4 years
until you find a reason to smile again
Hi.

This is always going to be a difficult queation to answer and is dependent on several factors ( I am not a doctor by the way ).

If you think you are depressed - how long has this been for?

What are your specific symptoms?

I have suffered from varying forms for many years.

I think that in general, it can last as long as it takes to feel at one with yourself - in mind and soul.. I know that sounds a bit corny, but personal wellbeing is the only way.

hope this helps and I sincerely wish you or whoever it is you are referring to, the very very best.

It depends on what kind of depression you're talking about. Are you talking about clinical depression? Depression can last any length of time. Some people experience it for years with little relief, for others it may be linked to a situation and might not last as long. For it to be considered clinical depression you have to have symptoms for most of the time for two weeks.

If you are dealing with a clinical depression get help! Talk to your doctor about possible medication. See if you can find a counselor to talk to. Research has shown that a combination on medicine and talk therapy is the most effective way for most people to deal with depression.
A person with depression will always have depression. They may learn to deal with it, but they will always have it.
It varys in each person. It can be helped with c`in a doctor to get on a good anti depresant and finding the root cause of the depression. Exercise is also a great way to help it.
it is different for everyone, taking meds, therapy, and getting out help me but Ive been dealing with this all my life
It really depends on a few things. First the medication you were put on. Each medication is a bit different, they all take 4 to 6 weeks to see if they are truly helping. Secondly If you are in counseling the recovery time is shorter and usually longer lasting. Keeping that in mind each person is different so the times vary. Don't rush recovery and do not go off any medication without talking with your Doctor first even if you feel better.
\it depends on what you are depressed about. If it's because of something that happened recently that is getting you down, then it may pass quite quickly. If you don't really know what it's about and you feel like this all the time, go to the docotor. You may need some counselling or even anti depressants for a while. Don't let it go on and on.
Depends how strong a person you really are! and if you can pull yourself together to do POSITIVE THINGS and you're around people who make you laugh and care for you - then you'll be on the mend pronto! Good Luck :) x
My personal experience is that depression is always in the background of your life but comes to the forefront at obscure intervals lasting for various amounts of time. I took anti depressants at the worst of it but have now chosen to deal with it without. You have good days and bad, it all depends how you have learnt to deal with it and the level of depression. Also clinical depression is different to manic. I'm talking about my experience of clinical. Hang in there, it does get better.
Until treated or the cause of the depression is identified & the person can deal with it. Sometimes It happens on a monthly basis due to female hormone chnages. If you are depressed, seek treaztment. Good luck!
Why don't you give everyone a little more information. There are lots of constructive answers here. Everyone hoping to help. I, fortunately, have never suffered and cannot understand why people do. A mental condition is different, as it can be a side effect from something else. Then again, some people have really rough lives as a child. I have noticed people get depression from working. I just think they are in the wrong job, but jobs this day are not easy to come by. If you can go out in a morning, look at the sky, the rain, the wind, the sun, the snow and think how wonderful it all is, or have an interest to get realy involved in, and that is much easier now, with internet and so many books at the libraries. If you unconsciously have a smile on your face, it is amazing how many people smile back at you, or ask you the way. Give up your seat on the bus, hold the door open for someone. Smiles and thank yous from other people, will give you a lift. Totally ignore those who don't say thank you. They are probaby miserable anyway...

Remember, only you can hurt yourself. If you expect from others what they are not capable of giving, you will get hurt. Hold on to this philosphy, its a strange one, but over time, helps you get through the bad times. Then, of course, there are the unavoidable times, you do get hurt. when you trusted to much.
unfortunately it never goes, but it is controlled by medication and therapy and a good diet
how long is a piece of string?its an individual thing!!
from a momoment to a life timeif not treated.
as long as you let it get to you, u have to be strong. don't loose your confidence, keep on thinking that you can make it! anything in life is possible only if you want to.talk to people you trust, if you have grand parents or uncles that are old and wise let them advise you. I suggested older people because they probably have suffered different kind of situations from war to poverty etc in the past, they have experience of life and can see the bigger picture most of the time.
aw.. Nuts
6 - 12 months is you had a recent loss: loved one, job, house, etc...But, if it last longer, you may have a brain chemistry imbalance and need anti-depressants. Good luck to you!
as long as it takes
Can be a few days, weeks, years. Get treatment.
till the time you learn how to overcome it.
