Does SSRI treats depression / anxiety in 6 months only?

A psychiatrist prescribed Lexapro for my anxiety disorder related to traveling in airplanes & staying in closed spaced. He claims that SSRI drugs take 6 months to treat this condition and I wont have to use it anymore, is it true?

It can be true. Usually, people have an episode of severe anxiety or depression, and they can overcome it. It takes between six months and one year of medication to make sure your body begins to produce seritonin on its own at the appropriate levels. If you go off the meds and it comes back, then you take the meds again for a year. If you go off the meds and it comes back again, then you take the meds for the rest of your life. But most people don't need to take them longer than six months.
no no no!! I have been talking to my psych and this is what they told me about SSRI's. they put artificial seretonin in your brain so if you stop taking them your back where you started. have a look at PROXAN this actually makes your brain create its own seretonin so you only have to stay on them for 6 months or whatever (some people like to take a couple a week to stay "on top"). also the EPA in omega is great for depression check out www.vegepa.com. please trust me as I have been taking SSRI's for years and every time I try to stop I crash agin because nothing has actually been fixed in my brain. a bit of psychotherapy is essential too, so you can understand what caused your depressiona nd you can move on and be a happier person! positive thoughts are the cure but its finding out and having the strength to get there thats the hard part. good luck and at least try the PROXAN before trying the SSRI's! good luck !! Um I would try to change psychiatrists to someone who wants to help you find the root of the problem not just prescribe you drugs... I have found a brilliant team of people I wish you could see them...
It can be true. It depends on what is causing your depression/anxiety. For some people, their symptoms are primarily psychological and the medication is only needed to get them "back on track." For others the symptoms are more longterm and they need medication longer. Make sure you follow your doctor's instructions when going off the medication. SSRI drugs help your brain to utilize the seratonin it already is producing so you want to gradually go off the medication so that your brain can adjust to the differences without undue side effects.
