Is depression a disease, or a state of mind?
Answers:
Depression is an illness, but state of mind plays a very big role. Part of the treatment for a depressed person includes changing one's thought patterns. It is easier for some people than others, but it is important. Here's a quote from Abe Lincoln (who may [or may not] have suffered from depression in his life):
"Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."
One of my favorite quotes.
Love, Jack.
Both, though clinical depression is still largely undiagnosed.
Depression is a mood. Clinical depression is a brain chemistry disorder, so it is a disease.
A disease caused by your state of mind
Chemical imbalance or because you are going through a rough time.
it's both
chemistry in the brain affects people having it, and how it's treated.
it's also a state of mind. Depression is overdiagnosed and overmedicated, and true and proper treatment can never be accomplished through medication alone, but a combination of medication and therapy.
a lifetime of poor psychology and inability to deal with things the right way leads to poor psychology later in life. It's treatable, but few people ever get themselves treated the right way.
EDIT: It is misinformation to say that depression is CAUSED by low serotonin levels. Yes, it is true that increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain improve symptoms of depression, but it has not been established that low serotonin is what causes it.
Good question.
Depression is a type of mental illness, usually caused by low level of seretonin in the brain. This can be caused by many things, such as a recent upsetting event, diet, heredity, lack of exercise, and many other things. It can go away as quickly as it comes, and some people (like myself) suffer from it for life and take drugs, called SSRIs, to increase the levels of seretonin.
Having said that, some people use the term "I'm depressed" to mean that they are sad and just need to feel that way for awhile. However, when I say "I'm depressed" to my wife, that's her cue to send me up to our bedroom, turn out the lights, and let me go to sleep for an hour or so. For me, this is like hitting the reset button. If I go too long with the clinical depression in full swing, I become suicidal. So you see, it really depend if the person has a true diagnosis of clinical depression, or if they are just using it as a part of speech.
Can be both.
I've been diagnosed with it, and I can't even tell. But I do know that most of the time, if I'm not taking my meds, I have a hard time figuring out why I bother sticking around and start contemplating ways to get out of it.
its a state of mind.its just all in ur head.u just need to occupy ur mind with things..like get a hobby
Can be used in both the senses.
The replies that have already come in are fine.
Both.
There is no doubt that neurotransmitter imbalances will cause depression. This is true of the strongest people on earth -- no amount of willpower will make you happy if you are chemically unable to signal joy.
That said, people with normal neurochemistry are capable of depression. This can be a state of mind or the products of the conditions of his or her life.
Whats important ot recongnize is there are people who are depressed due to biological imbalances that have no control over this depression. In this case, depression is certainly a disease.
It is a state of mind.
FROM EXPERIENCE IT MEANS 2 THINGS
1- it means how how think and what you think about
2- it means certian physical feeling that we can only describe as depression.
