If you don't already know, many patients tend to require increasingly higher doses of Xanax over time. That is one drawback of taking it. Anxiety symptoms can also change over time and so I wouldn't get too spooked about this common symptom (tingling/numbness). However, as mentioned, you should tell your doc about it.
You may be a candidate for SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). You may want to ask about getting switched to an anti-depressant drug.
The other thing is, drug therapy works best when you're also seeing a therapist. Therapy helps to locate and control some of the more subtle cognitive (mental) symptoms that actually set you up for these attacks to begin with.
When you feel this sense of suffocation and tingling and numbness, sit down and cup your hands over your face and breath. Or - Lol like in the movies - you can also use a small paper bag. After a couple minutes you should notice the symptoms have abated.
I have had these too and there's no way to quite describe just how uncomfortable they are; no words that capture the fear, frustration and sense of craziness that goes with them. But since you've had success with drugs before (Xanax), your body should respond to a different drug (probably even better), or an increased dose of Xanax at your doc's discretion. Best to ya.
While Psy (poster below) is correct that cognitive-behavioral therapy can be effective in many cases, see your doc first. The effecacy of therapy alone depends on the level of physiological arousal involved.
The best bet is to get stabilized on a med that works first. Then as you do therapy, work with your doc to determine if/when you can slowly ween off the drugs while stepping up your involvement in anxiety-targeted therapy. Do not stop drugs on your own.
yes you are having anxiety attacks. i suggest if your xanax is not working for you anymore you better go to the doctors right away and tell them whats going on.all you might need is a different kind of meds. they cant help you if you dont let them know whats going on with your body. go get help right away. good luck
yes i have,it is a terrible thing to have,i use to feel that i needed to run away, but i did not know what from,or where to,my heart use to race like mad,and it was impossible to relax.i could not eat,i lost a lot of weight,my doctor put me on sertrline, and i am ok now, good luck my friend,
Yes, I have that problem. I'm on Xanax as well. My anxiety increased dramatically over the past two years. My doctor increased my Xanax, I'm now taking 3 a day. I'm much more calmer. Sometimes after I reach the state of feeling like I'm going to pass out, I feel like I'm having a little seizure type thing going on with my brain. I've never had a seizure, but that's the only thing that I can compare it with.
In fact, I didn't go to the doctor last month to see if I could deal with this anxiety on my own. I'm now having severe TMJ problems, my nerves are on edge, I can't sleep and my mind is constantly going. So, don't try to do without your medication like I've done.
I feel for you. Anxiety is common, but folks with more emotional backgrounds, more worrying habits, and social interaction complications, the problem seems to persist throughout life. Some have incorporated worrying into their life, where they are used as sensors. depicting the value of something. Some of us remain unsatisfied with life and keep pressure to obtain or compare it. When anxiety last for a while, it causes stress which is unhealthy especially for our nerves. I believe your dizziness, trouble breathng, and numb lips come from the effect of a panic attack slowly occurring. Nerves senses are then blocked by the brain, attempting to reject that feeling as a mental disturbance. Then a fear of no control brings you to a panic. I suggest using a different prescription if xanax is now ineffective, such as more of antidepressant or even psychological evaluations. Simply, because drugs will zone you out to try and forget the behavior habits of anxiety from a physical stimuli. The counseling may help you understand a more in depth realization of you anxiety, possibly solving some discomforts that make you react negatively. This is all opinion just to be tooken in consideration, whereas i suggest checking out yahoo health or webmd.com to further your understanding. Your personal knowledge will always help fill-in where the docs leaves off. Good luck, God Bless, and take care!

Specifically, hyperventilation, pounding heart, sweating, shaking, trembling, tight chest, tight throat, trouble breathing, feelings of dizziness, feelings of going crazy, losing control, and passing out. This is one of the most common anxiety disorders and is very treatable. If you'd like, you should contact a cognitive behavioral therapist who will work with you on your problem in a very timely manner.
