Can a neorologist diagnose autism?

diagnosing autism

Answers:
Some neurologists (such as paediatric neurologists with psychiatric training) may be able to diagnose autism. The current method that is ideal for diagnosis is the use of a multidisciplinary team (including a speech pathologist to assess language and communication, an occupational therapist, a psychologist, a psychiatrist and sometimes a social worker). This sort of diagnostic panel is often only available in a major city where there is an autism centre.

Most neurologists will have sufficient training to be able to note behaviours or communication difficulties that could indicate an autistic spectrum disorder. However, for an accurate diagnosis (like with any medical problem) it is probably best to find someone who specialises in the area.
He can put you on the right path but I think a Psychiatrist has to give the official diagnosis. It is still classified as a mental disorder.
A neurologist is always a good idea when dealing with neurological disorders like autism.
However, Austim can be diagnosed without seeing one.
BUT going to a neurologist can rule out other disorders.
yes
My son was actually diagnosed by his neurologist after a psychiatrist failed to diagnose him. Every neurologist we've seen since (military, on the move a lot) always writes out updated reports giving their diagnosis as autism. I think most schools perfer to have a neuro's diagnosis to begin services for the child.
most children have to go through a series of test to get a diagnosis. i would not only get a neurologists opinion but my pediatricians and a psychologist or psychiatrist. there are so many different types of verbal and no verbal, hands on,reading comprehension and the list is endless with tests. each doctor will recommend what should be done and they should all be in contact with one another and have access to all the files of the child in question. i have a 12 year old autistic daughter. it sounds like alto and at times it is but you need to get the tests to rule out seizure disorders and other disorders. if you need any support go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chloesauti... i hope that you can find joy in this adventure even though it is a challenging one.
