why is schizophrenia such a complex disease?

I have had schizophrenia since age 14.

Answers:
We don't really understand that much about schizophrenia because we don't understand the brain very well.

Additionally, the exact cause of schizophrenia is not known, although we know there is a strong genetic component- we don't know which specific gene is effected.

Schizophrenia becomes a bit more complicated because it has numerous different presentations which a patient can have.

Ask you psychiatrist more about it and maybe he will recommend counselling about understanding the disease.

That's just the way it is. It's better than terminal illnesses but still one of the toughest to handle. I really respect and admire people who have it. Dealing with the meds and managing the challenges it adds to life is something most people couldn't handle.
Why because 1. People put to much attention to Autism and things like that even know they are all important we already know plenty about things like Autism, depression, Anxiety etc.
2. I do not think it is a disease and I am sure millions of others just might agree It is a gift from God, the voices really are real. I have something not very nice to say to my psychiatrist it really is not nice but here we go "Take your DSM IV and shove it!" Okay it is sorta bad. I AGREE WITH SAM!
Although the symptoms were documented in old Egypt 1000 BC,
the word "schizophrenia" is less than 100 years old. However the disease was first identified as a discrete mental illness by Dr. Emile Kraepelin in the 1887 dementia praecox (the name was later changed to "schizophrenia" by Eugen Bleuler)

Diagnosis is complicated by early treatment of schizophrenia’s positive symptoms. Antipsychotic medications, particularly the traditional ones, often produce side effects that closely resemble the negative symptoms of affective flattening and avolition. In addition, other negative symptoms are sometimes present in schizophrenia but not often enough to satisfy diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV): loss of usual interests or pleasures (anhedonia); disturbances of sleep and eating; dysphoric mood (depressed, anxious, irritable, or angry mood); and difficulty concentrating or focusing attention.

Because there is currently no physical test that confirms the presence of schizophrenia, and because schizophrenia often shares a significant number symptoms with other disorders, misdiagnosis is a common problem. According to one study surveying members of the National Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, there is an average delay of 10 years from the first onset of symptoms to correct diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders.

However, getting a correct diagnosis is necessary for finding a treatment program that works for you.
Because the brain and the chemicals in the brain are complex things.
