do you believe that long term marijuana use alters someones personality?

i know people say it is not addictive etc, but everyone i have ever known who smoked it long term has either gone totally mad, paranoid or at least very "spacey" and forgetful. do you think this is purely coincidence or is it down to the smoke?

Answers:
I smoked since i was 13 years old 20 years later I have quit. My senses have come back to me slowly. I feel a lot better now. Clearer about things, enjoying life without being in a haze all the time. I think I will recover.

It is addictive but you can quit. I would be more concerned about my lungs. That smoke does not all go away and can cause cancer.
i definitely think it affects people in different ways. i know people that have smoked it their whole lives and have very responsible jobs and look after their families. however it can affect people badly - you shouldn't smoke it if you already have problems with paranoia or depression
it is reversible.
it is addictive
it is dangerous
life alters how we think and act, so all those times spent high will effect how we interact with our world.
Still, i abused some serious stuff for year, it takes time, but normal service can be resumed
Yes I do believe that it does that. I believe it is mentally unhealthy to use except very occasionally.
addiction and going crazy are 2 different things you might not get addicted but that don't mean your it dont kill your brain cells cuz the smoke goes straight to the brain its like frying it hehe cooking ur brian hehe.rawr rawr. x____X yea like that.
its the weed, i've seen people turn mad, slow and paranoid, violent etc its banned for a good reason
Yes, all drugs taken over an extended period of time will break you down some way physically andd mentally.
It definitely screws you up and you become addicted to it. My brother smoked it for many years and he was a terrible person to live with. Thankfully he has kicked the habit and is now a great person to talk to.
You forget the most salient point about it - when people smoking it they become possibly the most boring people on the planet, recounting stories everyone's heard many times before.
duhduhduhduhduhduhduhduhdudhuh. ,,,,,,,,what/ ? ? what? no, .......no. It just changes the way we communicate. So as far as the impression you make on others, yes it changes you.
It really is true it alters your brain chemistry!
as latest scientific research shows, it should.
It influences the middle lobe of the brain responsable for the release of endorfin(happy hormone) and alters the way it works. It is however still inconclusive whether this change is bad yes or no!!
Yeh,makes you paranoid and depressed in the long term.
I have found that marijuana smokers tend to have negative attitudes and tend to be extremely lazy and boring. Just my own observation over the years. I have known a lot of them.
Yes. I had a long-time boyfriend that smoked pot and he was very reclusive and and paranoid about some things. Amazingly, he quit cold turkey when he decided to enter the health care field.
from experience yeah it does alter personality. i went mad then paranoid then forgetful its the last 2 that has got me most though. i used to smoke day and nite. then i wanted another kid so i stopped 4 years now. i would never be dependant on it again
Mary jane is not addictive and u can stop but long term use can alter a persons personality
One of my brothers is all of those things thanks to consistent marijuana use and even though he smokes only very occasionally now, the damage is done. He swears it hasnt affected him but the rest of us know it has.
It is addictive. It is also proven to cause permanent, irreperaible damage to the brain. It literally causes physical brain damage on the cellular level
My observations seem to support those who say it makes you stupid. Outside of that, I don't know.

'Nuff said?
I have made the same observation that users have become "totally mad," "paranoid," and/or "spacey." Also, I believe it is psychologically addictive, but mostly I have noticed that it is a gateway drug to other drugs that can do worse to the brain. The sad thing is that most users will deny this and believe it to only be beneficial.
It is no more dangerous than someone who drinks alcohol. If someone drinks in moderation they are fine, if they start drinking all the time and become an alcoholic then their persona changes. The same with marijuana, used in moderation it has no long term affects, but if someone stays stoned all the time they do become lazy, lethargic, and generally don't want to do anything. Much the same as an alcoholic. So when talking about the affects, compare it to legal substances already in use and you will see the differences are very few. And no, not everyone that gets high ends up doing crack, the same as not everyone that drinks beer and wine ends up drinking pure grain.
The idea that weed is physically addictive is inane. It is psychologically addictive without a doubt. However, there are no withdrawal symptoms for weed save for the urge to have more to calm ones anxiety. Unlike alcohol, the worst drug in the world (and highly addictive) weed produces no harmful withdraws like coma or death.

As far as causing someone to go mad that is as likely as one being struck by lightning. It reminds me of the old scare movies produced by the government in the 60's. It can make one lazy and irresponsible - and forgetful as far as short term memory is concerned.

I smoked it for 13 years before quitting. I had no withdrawal symptoms, I am nor have I ever been "mad" and I am successful, happy and am a supporter of a law that would legalize it. It is alcohol that needs to be outlawed.
It has been used as an extenuating circumstance in court cases as in. "Your Honour, I raped under the influence of cannabis" etc etc. So it must have some effect otherwise the lawyers wouldn't allow it, surely.
Trust me, it is very addictive like any drug. The users of those drugs would not notice the changes in the health and their mental state, but it is the people around them who would notice.
long or short term use of marijuana never leaves u thesame way it met u.
as far as spacey and forgetful are concerned, that's a definite yes. That's me! But I have also got a responsible job, a computer analyst job working for a bank. I went to college stoned, passed the hnd stoned, and can work stoned. Okay things take a bit longer, but I get them done. Drugs affect different people in different ways. The law is there to protect those too stupid to see that it's screwing them up. We all know cannabis only affects the person smoking it but alcohol affects everyone around you.
yes it does. my teenage son was on it for a long time and was really moody.
no one could have a conversation with because he was so irritable.

he is now off it and is a pleasure to be around.it is only when they come off the horrible stuff you realise that they have a lovely personality.
Yes it definitely alters the personality. It makes people very very boring. Fortunately it is surprisingly easy to give up, and here's the magical thing. When you give it up, all your smoking friends cut you out of their lives and you don't have to listen to them mumbling about the Grateful Dead all night.

Hash smokers are notoriously negative and here's why, they keep seeing SNAGS in everything, as an excuse for not actually DOING anything.
