I am currently experiencing withdrawals from Effexor XR.?
I was weaned off of Effexor XR for the last 2 1/2 weeks and am now COMPLETELY off of the drug, but experiencing major withdrawals. I called my doctor today to see if there was anything to do for this and he gave me a one week supply of 30mg Cymbalta. Isn't this kind of defeating the purpose? Is there going to be a withdrawal from the Cymbalta? Should I just continue with nothing and hope these effects go away? Please help.

Ack! I feel your pain. I was honestly quite shocked at how horrible Effexor withdrawal can be. Here's what I found out by doing a little research and talking to my doctor.
The withdrawal problem with Effexor is caused by the very short half life of the drug. That is, it leaves your system very quickly. So some people (myself included) even start getting sick if they MISS a dose or take it a couple of hours late. I REALLY wish someone had told me this when I started taking it.
The doc's plan when they give you something else to take is that you get a dose of anti-depressant that mimics the effects of Effexor and leaves the body more slowly. Lots of people say only ONE DOSE of Prozac will take care of the Effexor withdrawal problem. It takes over to kill the withdrawal and then leaves your body slowly over the next four to six weeks.
I don't know anything about Cymbalta, but that might have been the point.maybe Cymbalta has a much longer half life and therefore will not have the same withdrawal nonsense as Effexor.
For your sake, I hope so! This is sort of a weird phenomena in that a lot of people complain that it's very difficult to get off of Effexor (I vomitted for two weeks) but doctors don't tell anyone that when they begin taking it and don't seem to really believe there's a problem.
Good luck!
no ppl dont realize effexor is a great drug but with vicious side effects and cymbalya gives some meds in your system to make the transistion easier
I went through the exact same thing except without the Cymbalta. I also quit smoking. Quiting smoking was harder but not by much.
Sorry I don't have anything comforting to tell you. It just takes a while to get over it.
Good luck!
Don't worry it can take some time to come off this drug. Just take it easy and don't panic it will be OK. Follow what the Doc says. I've been there.
you should consult a different doctor for a second opinon; doctor's keep people on medication that they don't need-- to get more money from companies that they have medical contracts with.
hey join the mentally incapitiated ..Withdrawls , could be extreme anxiety., high blood pressure , fast heart rate ..seizures ..but if you were weaned off ..you should be okay!
You should not be having effects , your doctor could put you on klonopin for a while until the side effects stop! but becareful its habit forming ..get back if wanna know anything more.. sorry for the poor introduction..lol!
it's completely normal for doctors to give drugs to help with withdrawls. Fortunately Cymbalta is not nearly like effexor in the way it acts on the brain. it's not defeating the purpose. while the cymbalta will ease the withdrawl symptoms you will still be withdrawling from effexor and the after effect from the cymbalta isn't nearly as bad. Just give it time, it does get better.
Good luck
I was on this pill for ten years that wonted me to do drug rehab
Ive been off it for three months and am still having bad side effects they put me on paxil
and it differently defeated the purpose,I tried to stop take the paxil and it made me just as sick Good Luck
