My doctor just put me on Prozac for my depression how long does it take to start working?
Answers:
Two weeks. It builds up in your system. You should notice the effects by then.
I'd recommend working closely with your doctor with any medicine like this.
Call them if you have any worries, questions, are experiencing side effects, or anything!
It can take up to 8 weeks for most antidepressants to start working, and it generally takes at least 2 weeks. The reason it takes so long is that, while they do have some immediate effects, the therapuetic effects are primarily the result of changes in molecular cell biology and gene expression that occur in response to those immediate changes. Those changes happen on the time scale that your neurons naturally replace the particular molecular components involved in the response, so it's not an immediate thing. In order for those changes to take place, you have to take your medication every day for several weeks. Exactly how long it takes to reach the full effect varies among individuals, and can be anywhere from 2-8 weeks.
Unfortunately, there aren't any antidepressants currently on the market that work faster than that. A faster onset of action is one of the main goals of antidepressant research, but so far they haven't found anything that does it.
Usually about two weeks, although some people I've worked with have noticed the effects earlier than that.
From all the people I personally know that are on/were on Prozac they all stated that within a few days of first taking the drug they noticed a major improvement in their moods! That being said, it can take several weeks for the drug to take effect, it depends upon the person taking the drug and their system.
When I was put on Prozac earlier this year I was told it would take up to 4 weeks but after about 3 I was feeling better. It REALLY does work. I was so sceptical and didn't want to take it but I have never felt better! Good luck with it!
Around a week. The site below provides info on Prozac, but doesn't mention how long it takes for it to start working. Good luck.
Doctors will tell people 6 to 8 weeks, but usually it is sooner (like 4) or closer to the 6 mark. Be weary of any sideffects though because when I was perscribed it, it gave me tremors and high anxiety after 4 days. If anything like that happens to you, ask about zoloft which many find much milder.
As far as I know, antidepressents take about 3 weeks to build up in your system and for you to notice changes. IF you start feeling more depressed or suicidal, see your doctor right away as this is an allergic reaction.
if after 4 weeks you still feel too depressed go back to your dr. the dr can raise the dose of prozac. the dr put me on a tranqualizer while i waited for the prozac to take. if you see a psychiatrist they will increase the dose faster than another kind of dr. the psychiatrist specializes in getting you over the depression.
