How long does it take for effexor too start working? I take 75mg daily and have been on it for two weeks.?

I took Celexa 20 mg for about 6 weeks with no help it only made me feel very sleepy. So my family doc. put me on 75 mg of effexor XR. I just was woundering if it takes a little while for this medication to work. I just wish I could find something to make me feel "NORMAL" again. Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks for reading.

It takes about 30 days to become fully integrated into your system. I hardly notice that I'm taking it since it just seems to just take the edge off things and, as you say, lets me feel normal. I did try quitting it a few months ago just to see if there would be any difference and after about two weeks, the crying jags and depression returned with a vengeance. I learned that cold turkey is not a good thing. You have to slowly wean off it. But it does work, just give it time. It's also a matter of finding the antidepressant that works best for you since we are all different little chemistry sets. Good Luck.

It normally takes 2-3 weeks to become effective. Also, keep in mind that you may need a higher dose. If the Effexor doesn't seem to work, rather than bouncing from one med to the other with your family doc, I would suggest you see a psychiatrist. Your family doc may not be able to correctly diagnose your illness. My family doc diagnosed me with depression, when I actually have bipolar disorder. They are similar, but in may cases they are treated differently.
It usually takes 2 to 4 weeks for the drug to start working. I am surprised that Celexa made you sleepy. I was on it for about 5 years and i took 40 Mg. a day and never got tired.
It takes approx 4 - 6 weeks to get the full effect. I was on this medication and this is what my Dr. told me.
It will likely take about 2 more weeks for it to work properly as its just one of those drugs that needs to be used for a while first . My sister and mother take it also and this is what I've been told . Good luck I understand your apprehension about it not providing the immediate effects you seek.
For most people, Effexor can take 2-4 weeks to become therapeutic.
Your doctor should have discussed this with you as well make plans for a follow-visit or at least phone call to discuss how you're doing on it. 75 mg is a low dose - and they usually do start you out on a lower dose, then increase it if necessary.
Give your doctor a call and ask how long it should take for you to feel better if that dose is going to be effective.
Effexor and Celexa are used to treat many illnesses. Which illness did your doctor diagnose?

I agree with the post that suggested that you visit a psychiatrist. You might be able to find a specialist by looking at the roster of professors at your local medical school and what their specialties are.

Also you might want to look up descriptions of various illnesses to see what sounds like you. Some which you might want to check out are depression, bi-polar, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder. . .
How should you take this medication?

Take Effexor with food, exactly as prescribed. It may take several weeks before you begin to feel better. Your doctor should check your progress periodically.

Take Effexor XR once at the same time each day. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not divide, crush, or chew it. <~~ I found this on a web page about effexor. it says several weeks. my guess? 3 to 5 weeks
The first time I took effexor it seem to work within a few days, but the full
effect took a month. After a year it didn't seem to work so I used
Lexapro. Two years later I had to stop take lexapro because of
side affects. It seems to be an on going process of taking different
medications all the time. I wish you the best of luck.
