If someone 15 years ago was on Lithium for bipolar does that mean the disease is gone?

They are no longer on any meds and can you stay on that drug forever as i still sense the signs of the disease are apparent.

Answers:
Lithium, like any other anti-depressant or bipolar treatment, does not cure the disease...it only makes it more managable. LIthium is one of the strongest drugs you can take for bipolar - so it isn't necessarily a bad thing that they aren't taking it anymore, provided the decision was made by a medical professional and NOT the person. There are many other treatments - most of them more mild.
There is no cure for bipolar disorder...only treatment. It sounds like your friend needs to be on some kind of medication, and should consult a doctor immediately! I hope this helps! Good luck.
Doubtful. More likely, it is in remission. Continue to follow doctor's advice.
It does not mean that Bipolar has disappeared. The person may just not have had any mood episodes that affected their lives so badly such as hospital, arrested, etc

A person is born Bipolar, as it is predominately genetic. It does not just disappear.

Yes, you can stay on Lithium forever. I have been on Lithium for over 10 years. Still works.
once you are on a med ,you should stay on it until your
Dr decides otherwise=the pill makes you feel better as long as you keep taking it
No, it just means the lithium abated the manic condition temporarily. Lithium is a long acting medication and often symptoms return after the patient has been off the drug for some time.

It's best the patient be the patient and the doc be the doc.
Firstly bipolar isnt a disease and yes it could be gone but if you feel that you are in danger of a relapse i would talk to your doctor about going back on your meds.
I really don't think so. I know somebody who is on that, 43yrs old and had it the rest of their life and most likely to have it continously.
absolutely not. drugs only mask symptoms. they often create new problems. these are called by them "side effects". what they really are are "other effects" and they are no accident - they are known before the drug is marketed.

bi-polar labeling itself is false. the symptoms are joke. it is just another of the 431 ways a psych can label you so that he can drug you or shock you. the psychs even say it is bs. go to www.cchr.org and watch the vidoes of the psychs saying "we don't cure anyone" and "there are no vaild tests for mental illness."
Lithium will not make the disorder go away. Bipolar is a chemical imbalance and drugs only help to balance as long as you are on them Some people tend to balance out on their own in their 30s and no longer need meds but it doesn't sound like you think that is the case.
Lithium can be very dangerous so it's not a good idea to stay on it forever. There are many different drugs out there for bipolar patients, it's just a matter of finding the right combination for each person.
bipolar disorder is never gone, it's a life-long condition...
Nah, I have been bipolar for at least 15 yrs and it has reduced in intensity and has changed a bit,but it doesn't go away. I have been every number of bipolar there is, but I can never go off my meds intirely.
