Your better of putting the family member in a nursing home, and letting the state pay for his/her care.
I would consult an attorney and a tax professional for advice on both issues.
Under no condition do you allow the attorney, however, to tell you to claim guardianship over the family member. Once you do that you become financially responsibly for thier bills, both medical and non medical. All you want is Durable Power of Attorney. This gives you the ability to act in a medical and financial capacity for the person but not be financially responsible for them.
Does she have any type of insurance? That's a big factor.
If we're talking about the US, this type of service can cost anywhere from $15 to 30 per hour. Usually, if you hire through an agency they give you a rate if you need the service 24/7. Another answerer mentioned insurance, but getting insurance to pay for such a service is a rather unlikely scenario, unless the person has been insured for such a service prior to his/her onset of the condition.
There are also assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Have you considered any of those options?
Finally, if the person is on medicaid, you may be able to have her qualified for IHSS (in home supportive services). But remember this is government subsidized program, and takes time and effort to get the service.

BUt not yet, she's not in yet.
She has insurance but very little reserve $$$.
My father is in one in Texas and is paying $4000/mth.
My grandmother is in a church sponsored assisted living and it is $1700 -- the nursing home unit also sponsored by the church is $2900 -- the hospice care also sponsored by the church is $5400 -- this way the patients have the same staff and no drastic changes in their life to add any more stress for them or the their family members.

I had to put my dad in an assisted living home for a while, and it was a flat 1200.00 per month, excluding his meds, which ran about 800.00 per month. His income just barely covered these expenses, so when he got a bit better, I brought him back home, and stayed there with him. As long as he was on his meds, he was pleasant and managable. We had a nurse come in 3 times a week, to help him bathe, etc. and had physical therapy 2 times a week for a while. Medicare paid for these services. Our local senior citizens center brought hot meals for him every day thru the week, and that was a big help, too. I had to stay with him day and night, or he wasn't happy. Thank God for the help of these agencies. Don't try to do it all yourself!! It will completely wear you down. It took me a year to admit that I needed help, but being disabled myself, I had to finally ask for the help. Now that Dad is gone, I miss him terribly. Even tho he had alzheimers, he never got bad enough that he didn't know me. We had some really special times in his last years.
