Are men ashamed to admit that they have depression?

Answers:
well probably not "ashamed" but "shy" can be the right phrase
I don't think it's just men..i think it's both females and males...the way i see it...it's an illness just like diabetes and blood pressure and cholesterol...except people don't see it that way..they see it as a taboo...they might have it..but don't want to let people know about it b/c they feel ashamed of it...it's an illness and it's curable with therapy and medications!..so i guess both genders are..but if they're willing to admit it...there is nothing wrong with them or anyone else!
I think they may have a hard time admitting it, among other things. Or possibly they are in denial.
I really don't think men are ashamed to admit that they get depressed...

but physically depression affect women more and to a greater degree than it does men ( on average).
i think that a lot of them are because they think that they are invicible and are supposed to be strong. they were not raised to feel those emotions. it takes a very strong woman to understand and try to get a man to admit when he is depressed and ir you can that is a great feat. i hope this helps
I believe so. I guess its part of the '''macho'' image that we men sometimes try to create for our own ego trip. One must realize that depression is an illness like any other, and illnesses require treatment. I underwent a major depression including panic attacks. The thought of going to a mental professional was , in a sense, worst than the illness that eating me.after loosing considerable weight i went to one, received conselling and some medication...in a matter of days i was on the way to full recovery. Depression, in may instances requires the finding of the '''why'' and then the treatment for tht why.
OK-
Men in my opinion,
more afraid of looking weak, or vulnerable.
They are under a preconceived notion
that you always have to be tough,
you always have to maintain yourself,
stay in control at all times,
stay on your guard, don't need a doctor,
don't need therapy, darn sure don't need medication.
'If they cant deal with me the way i am
then I don't need em.' types...
The attitude of that gent-with any of those reasons-yes, I would say are ashamed to admit they are depressed.
-Poor souls.
However, there are those who are in touch enough
with themselves, that think about the reasonable good that could come from this situation-
whats the worst that could happen,
I could feel better?
Well, now there is a gent who is totally at ease with himself,
and knows when he needs to take care
of himself.
It isn't easy for anyone,
even the level headed ones have their moments.
But most of it I feel has to do with some kind of macho profile that some men feel they have to have,,,,
meds and psychiatrists aren't part of their 5 year plan..
We get depressed when the mind is forced to admit it is wrong and it begins to relearn an old concept. When there is pain involved we don't like the people around us. The brain dislikes having to relearn anything and will make unbalanced chemicals and discharge them into the spinal fluid . When we force our brain to deal with wrong beliefs we get pain... When we get retrained in life we get pain. I don't like to admit to any concept that will cause me pain.
To men, having depression could be a sign of weakness, and men do not like to show weakness. So yes, I would think they are in fact ashamed of their affliction.
My ex-husband told me that it was my fault that he was so depressed. That's when I wanted out. There just isn't enough room for two victims in a relationship.
