Panic and Anxiety attacks?
Answers:
Refer them to a trained professional. You shouldn't be messing around with this as you're obviously not qualified. You're dealing with a person's life. What is a "mental health specialist" anyway? Send them to a licensed psychologist! Why are you seeking professional consultation here from untrained people anyway!?!? Do you see any consultations posted by physicians? Cardiologists? etc. about their patients?
It is good to talk to the person just dont get upset if the person yells or tries to get up usually the person no longer wants to be in the place the attack is happening but they are so scared the can t move so they just yell or flail their arms in rare cases but do keep talking a panic attack usually lasts about 4 minutes .
be present ,reassuring and confident but dont push it...
remind them about deep breathing.
dont be all over the person , but tell this person that you are there no matter what and nothing is going to happen we dont die from panick attack.
Just have them focus on breathing deeply and once they calm down a bit try and get them to rationalize what they are feeling the anxiety over. It's usual a sense of being overwhelmed or not being able to control a situation.
I used to have them in my early twenties - it was THE worst feeling you could ever imagine. Out of nowhere you feel like you are going to die and don't know why.
A glass of water is nice and perhaps you can talk to them and change the subject but sometimes that doesn't help. Turn on the tv maybe and put on something happy or pleasant - like I said, the person probably thinks they are dying and doesn't know why, anything that can get them out of that mindset is helpful. If you are close to the person (boyfriend, etc) - you may wish to hug them, they may need it. Good luck.
The best thing you can do is just not make a big deal out of it, dont look at them with judgement as if they are second class citizens, and talk with them as you would anyone that needs help. Reassuring and offer them hope for positive prognosis of future treatments. In the 2000's there is many treatment options available.
Just use your heart!!
God Bless~~
