ive been on lustral for the past 2Y for OCD & Depression ive been presc venlafaxine but im scred bout taking?
Answers:
i was on Effexor for about 3 years. it worked wonders on the depression---i can honestly say that it totally eliminated the depression--what a great feeling!
unfortunately, there are a lot of possible side effects. i finally got so tired of the side effects that i quit taking Effexor--with my doctor's ok.
the three main side effects i had were:
1. profuse sweating. i would sweat gallons! seriously, my clothes were like i'd stepped into a shower. i HATED this! i could not tolerate warmth of any kind.
2. fatigue. constant, chronic fatigue. i was always tired. i let so many things slide---like yard work (which i used to enjoy) because i was always so damn tired.
3. NO interest in sex at all. all the equipment functioned---but there was just NO interest in sex. this seems to be a common side effect.
i was off the meds for a couple of months--i've since gone back on another SSRI. (selective serotonin reuptake inhibiter) called Lexapro. supposedly it doesn't have the same side effects. its done a number on the depression---its gone again. but yesterday morning i had one of those sweat 5 gallon episodes.
so i don't know if Lexapro, or any SSRI is right for me.
but---these things work differently for everybody. if i can't handle the side effects of Lexapro, I'll ask my doc for something else.
so far both the Effexor and Lexapro have effectively squashed my depression. now i just need to find one that has side effects i can deal with.
don't be scared about taking your meds. if they don't work---ask your doctor for something else. the important thing is that you seek help for your depression--because it is treatable!
best of luck---email me if you need to talk more about this.
1st update: Lustral is an SSRI as well! So you're probably already used to the side effects. in high dosages Effexor has the ability to work on dopamine levels in the brain as well.
Can you somehow work on your OCD without taking any kind of medications? If you cant then you should really take the medication. I hope your doctor told you the potential side effects of venlafaxine.
Hello: I am withdrawing my original answer as I have since had a kind and well meaning person give me some information I didn't know about; I am wishing you the very best, but perhaps take someone's advice who is more qualified to give you the very best reply!
All the best with your life!
Venlafaxine hydrochloride is a prescription antidepressant first introduced by Wyeth in 1993. It belongs to class of antidepressants, called serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI). In high doses, it weakly inhibits the reuptake of dopamine as well
Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) Desipramine, Duloxetine, Milnacipran, Venlafaxine
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) Alaproclate, Etoperidone, Citalopram, Escitalopram, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine, Sertraline, Zimelidine
Effexor(Venlafaxine) is not that diferent from the lustral(Sertraline)
Venlafaxine acts on norepinephrine, dopamine as well as serotonin. The side effects are going to be pretty much the same as what you have already been on.
I took venlafixine for two years for depression. It helped me a lot however I had a bog problem coming off it so if at all you can try something else I would.
Keep your chin up ok.
