What goes on in a Bipolar persons brain? What do they need most from a significant other?

My husband has bipolar and is sczio-affective and I am wondering exactly what it is like in his brain? What does he need most from me? How can I be most supportive of him?

Answers:
In terms of bipolar disorder, never undervalue his opinions by assuming they are unbalanced and never, ever use his disorder against him in an argument. Let him have moods like anyone else and don't assume his every mood swing is "part of his sickness." He needs you to value him and think of him in terms of the strength it requires to be honest with you about how he is feeling, because it can really make a person feel inferior to admit weakness. Know that he was born the way he is, it is no different than an imbalance like diabetes in terms of how you can (or should I say can't) control it without medication, and remember that many of the greatest artists, writers, poets, comedians, etc. were bipolar. Good luck.
If he is truely bi-polar, the best thing you can do for him is make sure he is taking his medication. Being bipolar, he is manic-depressive. So he will have bouts of extreme happiness (to the point of it being 'manic') and deep points of depression- Bipolars are the highest rate of suicides among psychological disorders. The BEST thing you can do for him is make sure he stays on his medication, and watch for signs that he isnt taking it- Crazy mood swings, insomnia, lack of concentration, among other things.
i am in no position to answer the first half of this question, for i am no professional and dont want to mislead you..but, what he most likely needs from you is for you too be there for him, let him know you are on his side, and that he is not alone..reassure him that you love him and that as a team you guys can work through anything..hope this helps, good luck
I can't stress this enough! Meet with his doctor/psychiatrist/counselor, whomever is treating his BiPolar. They will be glad to help you with this matter and will be happy that you asked to see them about it. If they aren't, something is wrong.
