Anyone done Group Cognitive Behaviour Therapy? I think I would feel uncomfortable & so prefer 1 on 1 therapy.?
Answers:
I have done both and would say that 1 on 1 is a good start, but if you can get into a group, the benefits would increase dramatically. When another person has a problem, we are on the outside looking in. We have a much clearer view of a solution. In group therapy, everyone is there for the same reason.to change their behavior. As you go through the group and learn more about cognitive thinking, you will begin to see how another group member could get through a problem. Then you begin to see the similarities in behaviors and apply the solutions to your own issues.
I've done both types of therapy. 1 on 1 is better for me because I need all the attention on myself, because I got little positive reinforcement from my parents. Also,, in a group you have to compete for time to talk, and groups can turn into encounter (confrontation) scenarios that hurt your spirit.
The key to 1 on 1 therapy is finding a therapist you like and who you know empathizes with you.
group therapy will move you faster through the process. in the beginning it may seem difficult but in the end you may understand yourself and others better and gain a safe support group in the process.
