What is the difference between severe and mild mental illness?

Answers:
what you have that's severe, what I have that's only mild

A severe mental illness (such as being a psychopath or a schitzopehnic) can prevent people from living normal lives. Mild illnesses such as bi-polar disorder and depression aren't as damaging, and can be handled.
Mild mental illness can be treated with therapy or drugs and doesn't necessarily affect one's ability to hold down a job or have relationships.

Severe mental illness is much harder to treat, it may require drugs, hospitalization and more drastic things like electric-shock therapy. Sever mental illness affects one's ability to hold down a job and have normal relationships and a normal life.
Mental illness (or emotional disability, cognitive dysfunction) is a broad generic label for a category of illnesses that may include affective or emotional instability, behavioral dysregulation, and/or cognitive dysfunction or impairment. Specific illnesses known as mental illnesses include major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
mild can be treated at home, with help if needed, severe needs to be treated within hospital and medication is required for severe, although medication can be given for mild if reccomended by your doctor,to stop it becoming worse., everything depends on the symptoms and diagnose,of a qualified doctor.
Whether a mental illness is mild or severe depends on the extent to which it interferes with a persons quality of life. There is no scale that rates depression less than schizophrenia less than manic depression, etc. Each mental illness has the potential to be majorly life altering and to have dire effects like suicide. Fortunately, as new psycho pharmaceuticals continue to develop, new hope continues to emerge. Mental illnesses are imbalances of the brain chemistry, diseases like diabetes or asthma, which can be treated with proper medication. Emotional or psychological therapy may also help a person to make the adjustments necessary to live a higher quality of life.

My socks hurt.
severe mental illness are those which can fragment the personality and affect the mood such as schizophrenia (positive and negative) bi-polar and uni-polar disorder. The person often has little or no insight to their mental health problem. (psychoses)
Milder forms of mental illness include clinical, reactive depression,obsessive-compulsiv. disorders and come under the term neuroses. These people usually have their personality intact and have insight to their mental health
It is the degree to which it (the mental illness) interferes with their ability to function (socially, vocationally, emotionally, physcially, etc). So if you are severely disturbed it impacts your functioning severly.
well lets see, i think severe mental illness would be, um, maybe severe and well.mild would be more, um.mild? what do ya think?
