This type of ritualistic behavior is often found in OCD and in some forms of autism as well. It's called ritual. It becomes a problem when it interferes with the daily activities of an individual.

i know of someone who wont turn right(or left,cant remember which) out of a street,
so they go the total opposite in direction to get where they need to
go.
so i guess this is some kind of ocd
