Well it depends on how bad the depression is? First I would talk to my doctor about this. Then I would become more active.
Join a gym. Join some kind of dance group. There are so many things to do. Start swimming.
1) Diet
2) Exercise
3) A good support line

Eat healthy foods from the 5 basic food groups (in moderation) to keep your weight within normal limits.
Keeping to an exercise plan will keep you fit with a feeling of well-being. And it will reduce stress.
For mental well-being, make sure you have someone to talk to. If you have no one with which you can vent or share your feelings with, join a support group in your area or go on-line to find one.
For a start you might want to purchase a book called The Mood Cure by Julia Ross, M.A. In it you will find many answers to your question as well as a natural supplement protocal that has helped me and several others that I know who have experienced varing degrees of depression. Another thing that you might consider is starting a "gratitude journal", that you write in daily, listing all the things that you are grateful for in your life. Exercising daily is another good way to combat depression.
i am doing that now. it is a daily battle, but it gets easier as you proactice day by day.

you pay attention to what you say to yourself and change how you talk and think.

you ask God to help you do this naturally.

you read books on health and changing how you think. for example the book 'feeling good' by Brian D. Burns.

you love yourself no matter what and never give up.

be careful medication can and will cause you more health problems.
