Bipolar vs. Borderline Personality Disorder?

How does a mental health professional distinguish between a rapid cycling bipolar and borderline personality disorder?
I've read descriptions of both and they seem so similar.

That's a great, and challenging question! It is very difficult to differentiate between the two, and therefore a good mental health professional will need to take time to get to know the patient before he or she can figure it out.

You probably know the symptoms that overlap, so I will tell you the differences. The primary difference between the two is that, with BPD, the individual often has an intense fear of abandonment, which is often not present in bipolar d/o. There is often a chronic feeling of emptiness with individuals with BPD that is not necessarily present with those struggling with bipolar d/o.

Here is a great link if you'd like to read more. Good luck, and hope this helped.

Dont know.Thats why they are the professionals
bipolar is much less frequent
Not too sure, but perhaps if you find out you can help diagnose me!
Bipolar disorder you normally have both highs and lows while BPD is mainly depression. I was diagnosed as bipolar and I have never had a high episode. So I do not believe that I am bipolar.
Bipolar affective disorder = patient exhibits both manic & depressive disorders. Mania meaning excessive excitement, then followed by excessive depression.

Borderline Personality Disorder = persons who have difficulty maintaining a consistant, stable mood & self image. (like Bipolar), except it is manifested as unpredictable & impulsive behavior, outbursts of anger, irritability, sadness & fear.
