at what point does weight training become overtraining?
Is it overtraining when you've done it for too long, for example 3 hours? or is it overtraining when your arms hurt and yet you try to carry on? thanks for the help.
(probably a stupid question, I know)

You can do more harm than good by over training as your muscles can be damaged, Three days a week & no longer than two hours a day is sensible unless you are in a competition. I have a gym in my attic & by the time I have finished work I haven't the strength to climb the stairs sometimes
If you mean in a bodybuilding sense, overtraining is when your muscles 'burn'.
The build up of lactic acid in the muscle dissolves muscle tissue to feed itself, so to bulk up, you should have protein about 30 - 60 minutes beforehand to get it in your system and do no more that 2 or 3 sets with your maximum weight on each musle group.
Overtraining is when youve exhausted your body for hours on end. A little pain is just proving that what your doing is working, 3 hrs is a bit excessive.
more than an hour a day is an addiction to the adrenalin your body produces when working out
Over training is where you dont allow your body time to recover from the training you have put it through. If you train 7 days a week its too much, take a day of mid week to allow the body a rest period. If your new to exercise my advise is, simple exercises like sit ups, push ups,leg stretches etc.10 of each with short break between each.Do this twice daily,3 or 4 a week for the1st week or so then up each exersize to 15 of each and so on to get you used to exercise first.Or join a gym and consult an instructor in the field you wish to train in.
overtraining can be a specific term that refers to symptoms in the athlete caused by working too hard and not getting enough rest. these symptoms include fatigue, insmonia, depression and lowered immune system.
I don't think its a stupid question. However, you need to clarify as the first person said if you are talking about body building or just excercise. I would say when you do so much, that you don't want to step in the gym again thats too much. Its a gradual process, not some overnight bs shown by those TV commercials.
