My shaving cream is not working, what is the exact procedure for a smooth shave?

I'm trying to shave my beard like i always do, many ytimes it has been rough and a bit painful. But a few times i managed to make it so smooth by putting a layer of shave cream then soaking with warm water, then trying another layer.and it was a very smooth shave. But this didn't work for me always, .what exactly can i do to make the skin/hair soften so that the shave will be easy? Why did i have times when it was super smooth but other times i try the same technique and it doesn't work

Answers:
Shower first with hot water, playing on face, and soap your face well. Rinse. Don't dry face. Shave directly, lathering and rubbing the lather in for 1 minute, all over face and neck.
The Gillette Fusion razor is great! Have a sharp razor!
Shave with beard grain the first stroke, and clear razor fully with running water each time. Do your whole face with the grain. Now carefully do it against the grain, and you should feel no stubble when done,
none.
If your hair is properly softened, and the razor is sharp and clean, a close shave is not difficult. Try "Edge" gel, and work it in your hands before applying.

Make sure you have a high quality razor and then use some shaving cream with aloe in it
First of all do not use cream, use gel! Get yourself a Gillette Fusion razor, they are the bomb!
You need one of those 5 blade razors where the first blade bends the whiskers over for the second blade which bends over the whiskers for the third blade and so on and so on.
Unless the commercial lied to us all.
It is the razor. Get a different brand, preferably the more expensive brands, which are less likely to pull and nick and will shave close.
Helixburger is correct shower first!
Plucking (tweezing), Shaving, Depilatory creams and Waxing are temporary hair removal methods.Waxing usually lasts for 3 weeks, but it is painful. Electrolysis and laser hair removal are "permanent" hair removal methods but are expensive and you have to find a trained professional, otherwise your skin could be damaged.
