Seroconversion is the development of specific detectable antibodies to microorganisms in the blood serum as a result of infection or immunization.

This occurs when the body's immune system reacts to a virus and produces anti-bodies. HIV can be detected following seroconversion - before that, it is not detected by standard test. There are however new tests that may detect it earlier.

Seroconversion for HIV occurs in the first month of infection, though the virus may still be undetectable for the first few months. A test after three months is generally considered reliable; though a follow-up test at six months is usually advised.
