It's hereditary, not at all contageous.. Mine (a mild, barely noticeable case) showed up when I was in second grade or so.got it from my dad's side of the family. There are medications that can relieve or at least minimize the symptoms.

born with it.
Yes You are born with it and it ends up showing up later.
It's a genetic neurological disorder that varies in severity. It can also just be subtle hand gestures that are repeated over and over. Support your friend. It is embarrassing and difficult for him as it is. Many people exhibit these behaviors at an early age and aren't diagnosed until later because of lack of knowledge of those around them Don't worry, you won't "catch it" If you mimic his behaviors it's because of your anxiety about it . You don't have Tourettes. Be a great friend and he will answer all the questions you need answered. He is lucky to have you in his life.
Tourette's Syndrome (also known as Tourette's Disorder) is a fairly common childhood-onset condition that may be associated with features of many other conditions. Thus, what started as a site for parents and educators on Tourette's Syndrome expanded to include other conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, non-OCD anxiety disorders, Executive Dysfunction, depression, Bipolar Disorder, autism spectrum disorders including Asperger's Disorder, 'rage attacks,' sensory integration issues, and sleep disorders.
