The jury is out on this one.
"The current study is investigating the effect of isoflavones, a chemical in the soy plant, on blood pressure. Some of the participants will receive enriched isoflavones and others will receive a placebo. It's a double-blinded study, so neither researchers nor participants know who is getting the soy product. All the women will wear a device that automatically measures blood pressure every 15 to 20 minutes during the day and night.
Investigators say soy appears to increase the production of nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes blood vessels. Relaxation of the blood vessels may then lower blood pressure. Since the study is still ongoing, the results are not yet known. However, investigators say they have seen some dramatic decreases in blood pressure among the participants and believe the effect is due to the intake of isoflavones. Researchers say soy foods and products don't contain the same amount of isoflavone as the enriched product used in the study. So they don't recommend increasing soy in the diet. However, if the study shows enriched isoflavones to be beneficial, the product may one day be available as a dietary supplement or drug. "
high blood pressure is a modifiable condition. Most times, one is encouraged to exercise, lose weight if one is overweight, and eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
