Do only males get color blind?

my boyfriend and I are having a debate...please choose sides.

Answers:
No. Men have simply a larger chance of inheriting colorblindness but women can also be colorblind. These are the odds

"5% to 8% (depending on the study you quote) of the men and 0.5% of the women of the world are born colorblind. That's as high as one out of twelve men and one out of two hundred women. I am going to limit this discussion to protans (red weak) and deutans (green weak) because they make up 99% of this group." No, it afflicts both men and women.

I was shocked when I joined the military at how many people are actually color blind. In my Basic training alone we had something like 15 color blind people, out of 200. I think it is more common in men, but it can afflict both men and women. I've known two color blind women, and at least a dozen color blind men.

There are also different degree's of color blindness. Some people literally only see shades of black and white. Others just can't see Red, Green, or Blue. Some others just don't see colors as well as others. There's a very common test for color blindness, that any eye doctor can issue, which involves looking at a set of cards with numbers written amid a myriad of colors. They can use the test to determine your level of color blindness, as well as which colors you can or cannot see. We had one guy when I joined the army who could barely read any of them. He literally saw in black and white, and he didn't even know he was color blind. He simply thought that was how things were suppose to look.
No, males just have a higher rate of being color blind.
No, women can get colour blind as well, but it's extremely rare. They pass on the defect, but it manifests mostly in males.

The colour-blindness gene is a recessive gene (it needs to be received from both parents to manifest) carried on an X chromosome, thus if the man inherits it from his mother, it's enough for him to be colour blind as the Y chromosome he inherits from his father won't have a "non-colour-blind" version (allele) of that gene (all men have XY sex chromosomes).

For a woman to be colour blind, she would have to have a colour blind father, and a mother who carries the gene as well and passes it on to her (all women have XX sex chromosomes).

So, a man can be colour blind, but a man who is not will not pass on a colour blindness gene as he doesn't carry it, for sure.

A woman can carry the colour blindness gene, but for it to manifest in her daughter she would also have to have a colour-blind father.

Hemophilia works in a similar way.
Yes. One men get color blindness. It is a herititary thing. Often damaged or certain genes such as color blindness within the sperm is passed down from a male to male offspring. This is also why diabetes is more likely in men than in women, by about 8% more likely.
No. My mom is color blind.
More males than females are color blind. For females, it's pretty rare, but it DOES happen.
"Depending on just which figures you believe, color blindness seems to occur in about 8% - 12% of males of European origin and about one-half of 1% of females. I did not find any figures for frequency in other races. Total color blindness (seeing in only shades of gray) is extremely rare."
