My son will be 13 next month, what is a safe age for him to start lifting weights?

He has not had a growth spurt yet, that will not stunt his growth, right.

Answers:
13 is a fine age to start weights, BUT, his body is still growing, the joints are still developing so no heavy weights.
Ideally, should be concentrating on techniques, basics, stance, balance, control. I would strongly recommend joining a Weight Lifting Club, not a Gym, build his natural strength, ligaments, joints & diet with correct instruction/ supervision. At his age the weight isn't the issue, it's correct lifting techniques. By the time he's 16 you'll see the results !
while every person's body is different, it would probably be safe for him to start doing some light lifting. the only weight-lifting activity that will stunt his growth (that i know of) are squats, legpresses, or any exercise that will put pressure on the spine. light benchpresses, curls, etc should be fine. This is, however, probably not the time for him to be maxing out on the bench or anything like that.
It's time. Just remember, some people don't have the proper body style to add on great big muscles. I'm one of those. It takes a ton of exercises to add muscles for me, but I enjoy better definition than others. And remember to start out slow. Nothing kills an exercise routine faster than starting out and being sore, day after day. He'll want to work out to the point where he's just barely sore every day. And get a book from the Library to learn the routines from. You CAN overexercise and that's actually bad for the muscles. Do it right the first time and he'll probably enjoy it for the rest of his life.
Hi there, exercise even in the form of weight lifting has never stunted anyone's growth. He could have been weight lifting from age 6. Exercise is so important. Kudos for you. Many children these days will not live as long as their parents due to the diseases associated with obesity. Have a great weekend.
the best thing to do is to go to your family doctor to get him checked out first, some children have different bone and muscle issues, this way you wont have to worry, best kind of doctor to go to would be one in sports medicine.
he'll be fine if he stared lifting weihgts now i know some kids that have started at ten as long as you let him know start light and dont hurt himself and he'll be fine and much stronger than most other boy in football when he's ready wich is good
age doesnt matter..he can start working out any time.but there i am sure that he will grow alot more..he is still 13 so working out might prevent him from growing taller.so i think 15-16 should be ok.
